So I'm looking to get my first gun to go out hunting. I don't wanna have to burn a hole in my wallet but I've been asking around and I've been told a Remington savage axis for beginners and a good scope is redfield 3 to 9 power. Now my question is is that good? I didn't get alot of detail? How much will ammo be for it? I would like to spend max $500 on a rifle and scope any other suggestions? I'll be mostly hunting deer for now.

I'd think you'd be looking for a good used package. Do yourself a favour and pick a relatively mild recoiling calibre, so if I were you, I'd be looking for something in 7mm-08 or .243, maybe 6.5x55. Plenty of power for the vast majority of north american big game; but easier on you than some silly magnum.
And I'd be prowling around the Equipment exchange, there are plenty of good bargains and good people.

Anything in 308 would be good, big enough for anything but mild enough in the recoil department. They are a accurate and it's easy to find, and everyone makes a rifle in that caliber. A 3-9 scope is all you need for hunting. 308 is what I have used for years.

There are lots of good options out there for starter guns. A little more information about what you want to hunt and where, what if anything you have shot before, and what appeals to you, and people will be able to make more specific suggestions. Here is a little summary I made up a while ago of CGN advice to posts like yours

It is mostly about cartridges, but goes through some particular rifles and a bit of scope advice as well.

If you can find something in .25-06 than you'll probably enjoy it. It's what I recommend as a youth or starting hunter calibre. Easier on the shoulder than the magnums and more forgiving than the .243 (which I hear people recommending to beginners fairly often)

I picked up my first rifle last year, a bolt action Savage Model 111 in 30.06, At $450 it is a great value, comes with scope, weighs in at 6.5 lbs. You can shoot on the low end for about a buck a bullet. It packs a bit of a punch but i wanted something with versatility. Got a Black bear last fall and one this spring with it and hopefull for a moose and nice buck this fall.

Just say NO, to Remington 770.
