African dangerous game outfitter recommendations

Back from a New Zealand hunting trip and i’m thinking about booking a dangerous game hunt in Africa for August 2027 or 2028 season.

A priority would be either Cape Buffalo or Kalahari lion with a couple plains game species. I’m reaching out to see if anyone has any firsthand experience in either lion or cape Buffalo hunting, if you brought your spouse or family, which outfitter they used, and if they would recommend them.

Only looking for firsthand experience at this point in time.

Thanks,

so for free range lion: tanzania. mozambique. zimbabwe and namibia (some areas are canned) and maybe some aeras aside of kruger park might have free range lion like in timbivati but the cost will be a killer ... the rest whatever you heard about will be canned and will hear story that lions has been left alone and feed themselves ... but for the free range i will go to zambia if it was me. we operated there at the end of the 80s and it was great and it is way better even now ... enjoy the trip planning.

Zim is or can be generally best value.

A true wild lion hunt, prepare to open the wallet.

Many PHs across many countries will have good Buff hunts so budget plays into where you want. Tanz will be generally be the most. Moz, Zam, Zim, Namibia closer to each other. With variations. Some countries have lower trophy fees but higher concession costs. So it's all relative.

I hunt with CM safaris in Zim for proper Dugga boy tracking. In the Zambezi valley. It's exactly what I was looking for.

As for wife, depends what she's like, or okay roughing it or needs higher end accommodation. Or if she wants to follow along your hunts, or site see. If you have the budget, you can be choosey in what and where you hunt.

Tanzania should be at or near the top of the list and the Selous if your after dangerous game and more specifically Buffalo. Lions manes are short due to the heavy brush. I was accompanied by my wife and 11 year old son last year in the Selous…it was fantastic. I killed two old lone Buffalo bulls and a Hippo on land. I will send a link to my hunt report on AfricanHunting Forum.

I'd recommend Charlton-McCallum safaris in Zimbabwe & Mozambique, or Mokore Safaris who also operates in Zimbabwe & Mozambique. I've hunted twice with both outfitters. Both are completely professional, experienced, and high quality outfits. I hunted Buffalo 2x with Mokore, one in Zimbabwe and one in Mozambique, and Buffalo 1x in Mozambique and Elephant 1x in Zimbabwe with CMS. I never hunted lions, but their tags for lions are very limited, you would likely be looking 2 years out to book lion.
I just returned yesterday from a buffalo & crocodile hunt in Mozambique with CMS along the Zambezi river in the Magoe region at the intersecting borders of Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. Wonderful country, many buffalo, and enough lions that we saw tracks nearly every day and heard them several nights. Below is my friend and most excellent PH Alan Shearing of CMS having a look at my buffalo that I shot last week. You may also private message me if you'd like more info.
