Quick question folks, please excuse my ignorance. I'm trying to decide between an 870 Express(2&3/4" and 3") and an 870 Express Super Magnum(2&3/4"-3&1/2") for my first shotgun. I'm thinking about getting one with a 28" barrel and then buying a 12.5" aftermarket barrel in the next few months to make it lighter and more packable for back country hiking trips. My question is this: Will the aftermarket barrels that are marketed as being for the 870 Express also fit the 870 Express Super Magnums or not? If not then my decision is made for me and I'll likely go with the regular 870 Express. Thanks in advance for any answers and clarifications, I appreciate the help.

no reason for larger than 3". just beat up your shoulder.

No reason for larger than a black powder muzzle loading .410. Since when is reason absolutely required? Guy wants to keep his 3.5" options open, so be it. I'd only use the super mag, for a tactical gun, if I didn't have the coin for multiple firearms. It might do a pretty good job, but I think a tactical style gun, would be better off with a smaller reciever. Also with the super mag, if you want to put a side saddle on the reciever for the shells, you'll either need to use only a 4 rounder, change the fore-end, or cut the fore-end, as the "Field Style" fore-end is to long, and will bash into a 6 round side saddle, preventing the action from cycling.

Although, I will admit, 3.5"s are mainly for either geese, or showing off. Not that I have a problem with their use for either.

Thanks guys, for the responses. LOL, my intent is definitely not for showing off, not really wanting to make a tacticool shotgun either. My thoughts were more along the lines of being able to use it for a wider range of game(than the regular 870 which only allows 2.75" & 3") when used with the stock 28" barrel, and also being able to drop in the 12.5" barrel for lighter weight and more mobility when backpacking in bear country(which is everywhere I camp, backpack and fish).

Ideally I'd like to get away with only buying one gun to cover these bases as the rest of my money available is going towards a reloading set up and cleaning items, this will almost certainly be my last gun purchase this year(I can live with it though, this is gonna be #3 and I still haven't gotten my damned PAL in the mail yet...Christmas is coming early for me this year:D)

I dunno, maybe I'd just be better off saving a few bucks and getting a regular 870 Express and putting the money towards the reloading equipment?

I you just want a gun to take back packing, the canam Griz boat is supposed to be arriving any time. I'll take a Griz over and 870 express, any day of the week. You could very likely buy one with a 14 inch barrel for roughly the cost of a 12 or 14 inch aftermarket barrel.
