Aftermarket ghost ring sights; XS vs. Wilson Combat

I'm in the process of installing Wilson's with Tritium front and rear. They are very rugged and well made.

Suggestion - get a gunsmith to install them. For the hassle and risk of screwing it up... it's worth the $50 or whatever. Your MM will thank you.

I torture tested LPA's on 870's for a large police organization 5 or 6 years ago and they literally fell apart..mind you, they were seeing over 400 heavy loads (slugs, buck and of course some bird shot) a week for 6 months. They are easier to mount than the Wilson's though but the rear sight is what kept becoming damaged!

I personally prefer the Wilson Combat Ghost Rings (formerly Scatter Gun Trac Locs) and my teaching, hunting AND competition 870 and 1100 have them.

The accuracy of the Wilson's is uncanny once you get used to using them. I've used my gun rather than a company gun to test the accuracy of various specialized shotgun munitions for the same police service.

Oh, sorry to say this canucklehead but..there really isn't a need for the rear tritiums on the Wilson ghost ring. If your gun is set up right you'll automatically be looking through the ring when you mount it and then you can shoot off of the front tritium dot! I've fired these sights alot in low light and they work!!!!:)

RD..whereabouts in the Ottawa Valley are you?

Glad to hear it, because I went and ordered a set of the Wilsons this morning. P&D had them in stock, and word on the forums seems to be that they're the best. Game plan is to take them and the MM up to Jason at Gunco for installation.

I'm a little ways outside of Cornwall. I note that you're in the general vicinity too. And when you say competition, are you talking Practical Shotgun or something similar? Because I've been kinda interested in giving that a shot, pardon the atrocious pun.

Oh, I know I didn't NEED the tritium rears. In fact, I didn't even NEED the tritium front... but it's just soooo cool! :p

What kind of half-assed mall ninja would I be if I didn't go all the way? :D

I thought these look more rigid than the Wilson's, I guess not?

Okay, let me take these in order!!!

rd... yup, we'e close by... I'm actually over in Kemptville. I use my shotguns for training (I teach cops and mil), 3 gun and action shotgun (just love 'em both) and a couple of the guys at EOHC sets up awesome courses fo fire!!!! Oh, and I always take my Tac Lock sight5ed 870 to the deer camp.

You'll love the Wilsons!!!

Canucklehead...no worries mate...there is nothing wrong with LCF or with haivng something just 'cause ya gotta have it!!! I have guns I'll never shoot and accessories that I'll prba bly never use!!!!!! He who dies with the most toys wins!!!;) :)

Mebiuspower... the problem we ran into was with the rear bases... we could not get them to stay mounted. Our gunsmiths mounted them and we had to take them back every couple of weeks. I just did not feel that the rear base was sturdy enough for police/mil work. There was excessive wear to the base and we could not get it to hold zero and that was before we even took it out operationally. I even stayed arround to ensure they were properly mounted an dlocktited in place!

That being said, I have a friend who swears by them and he has pounded the crap out of his without any probs... maybe we got a bad lot but I wasn't impressed and they are kinda bulky (I find anyway). They do have a nice sight picture when looking through them but I couldn't wring the accuracy or longevity out of them for police work. I'm not a fan!:(

Cool. I always thought the LPAs are better because of how it looks and the cost. I have Wilson ghost ring rear / XS front and I'm pretty happy with this setup.

Glad to hear it; the word of mouth on them was very positive.

I took the class at EOHC a while back, but I think my membership is lapsed; basically, I'm not really feeling the need for handguns at the moment, and I got the impression there wasn't much to do up there with shotties... but if I'm wrong on that count, heck, I think I'll join up again. What's action shotgun?

Action shotgun is kinda like shooting IPSC but with a shot gun.

Lots of falling plates, poppers, frangible targets and shooting through ports and from various positions or on the move etc.. Not many clubs have them but when there is one it's usually worth going..I haven't really been to a bad one yet.:)

That sounds like one heckuva lot of fun. How would one go about getting into this sort of thing?

Back in 1990 I bought an 870 Police Magnum and sent it down south to the original Scattergun Technologies and have them install their Border Patrol package on it.

I carried that shotgun day in/day out for 4 years working in the mining exploration business, and had three very nasty wipeouts on slick Canadian Shield granite - two times I fell on the shotgun, and the last time I let it go from about 4 feet and it hit the rocks sights-first and then bounced down the rock another 6-8 feet (it was either that or break my neck falling off said rock) - those original Trak-Loks have some nasty gouges out of them, but they didn't move.

Unfortunately, I didn't keep an accurate round count, but in that time it's seen approx. 100 3" slugs, 250 2 3/4" slugs, 50 3" 00 buck, 300 2 3/4" 00 buck, 50 3" 0 buck, and 500-600 2 3/4" various upland game loads.

15 years of HARD use, and the sights are still on their original setting - to say I'm pleased would be an understatement.

You made the right descision getting the Wilson's.

Yes...in fact the whole concept of a ghost ring would be lost with fiber or trit inserts on the rear site...

The inserts would draw too much of your eye...and the rear sights would not ghost.

I have two sets, one with fiber and a plain set...(with a fiberoptic front site) The plain rear site is much better...

Regarding durability...I can't say...both of mine are rail mounted...and they're on and off the shotgun quite a bit...they seem pretty solid ( I guess time will tell)

LPA was the only Ghost Ring I could fnd that was rail mounted...and you know how I love to change things around

You have a few choices in your neck of the woods

I expect that EOHC will continue to have shotgun side matches next year at their IPSC matches. Although you do have to be Black badge certified to shoot the pistol portion ...the shotgun side matches there are not sanctioned by IPSC so anyone can shoot them. Lot's of fun and a good introduction to get you properly addicted to IPSC 3 gun. There are a few other clubs that put on similiar type matches...but I don't have much in the way of details.

IPSC sanctioned Matches

IPSC 3 gun - you would need to be Black Badge Certified in order to shoot sanctioned IPSC Matches (and well worth it I might add)

Tons of info here http://www.ipsc-ont.org/ including how to get your Black badge. The Black Badge is a pistol course...but anyone who is Black Badge certified can should IPSC rifle and shotgun as well. IPSC 3 gun is just starting to catch on...and I would guess we'll have 6 sanctioned 3 gun matches next year. They are an absolute blast...:dancingbanana:

If you need any additional info...feel free to drop me a PM

I met the former head gunsmith for Scatter Gun before Wilsons bought them out. He does very nice work.
