Aftermarket rifle stocks...which one to choose?

Hi Gang,

I have begun to discuss this in my other thread about the Weatherby Vanguard rifles, but I thought it deserved it's own thread.

Who makes the best aftermarket replacement rifle stocks? I know McMillan and HS Precision are considered some of the best...how about a high end Hogue Overmolded one for use on my new Vanguard rifle? I understand the more expensive Hogue one uses a full length aluminum bedding block. Do these stocks rate up there with the "others"? If not, what others are worthy of consideration?

Your thoughts, my esteemed shooting brethren? :)

Call me biased, but this conversation starts and stops with the McMillan "Sako Classic" stock. It's a great stock shape.

Order standard fill, and the rifle with a standard size scope will balance just on or at the rear of the front guard screw and weigh in at 8 5/8 pounds or so.

Rick Bin for $400 in his Christmas special, it will take 22 weeks approximately to get here. You get to order your colour or "swirly", LOP and type of pad. It will drop right in and shoot okay, but will probably do better with bedding.

If you want a synthetic, McMillan kinda rules the roost. If you want a laminate or walnut stock(see "REAL Gun" ;) ), check out boyds or Richard's Microfit

RickF covered it, except spend the extra $80 for the carbon fiber version (Edge Technology they call it)

Regular construction McMillans are 32-34 oz, an identical carbon fiber one is 21-23. If it turns out muzzle heavy, just add an oz or two under the recoil pad and you will still be ahead.

If it was me, that is what I would do. (after making sure the rifle shot well to start with) Going with a 1" decelerator will add an ounce or two, I believe.
My days of packing a rifle much over 8lbs for serious hunting are over and the vanguard is not really a "lightweight". The added cost for the Edge is the cheapest way to lose a bunch of weight from that rifle.
