Hey guys,

I am looking for some aftermarket stock options for my Savage 111 long range hunter in 300wm. It has a bottom bolt release and a hinged floorplate mag.

I've looking at B&C stocks and Boyd stocks thus far. I really like the looks of the B&C M40, but I don't think they make a stock to accommodate a hinged floorplate magazine.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks
Ben

Ben,

When you switch your barreled action out of its original stock, generally you leave the magazine behind in favour of a new magazine system. What this will require is that you get a new bottom metal that will work with magazine systems like the AICS pattern detachable magazines, for example. I believe that Boyds has some offerings that allow you to keep the internal mag, but if you're upgrading to a stock/chassis, then why not upgrade to a 5 round magazine too?

Hi Ben,

I have the B&C M40 stock on my .223 Model 11 and really like it. My Model 11 originally came with detachable mags that latched into the cheap plastic stock. I found myself new bottom metal from a used AccuStock and bought some new Savage mags (5 round .223 flush mount).

There isn't a lot out there for AICS-compatible bottom metal that will fit the M40 stock. If you are really keen on high-cap mags, you might consider an MDT chassis or similar. If you don't mind tracking down the Savage bottom metal and mags, then the M40 is a decent setup.

Hope that helps!

I'm with Scott. mdt has a variety of options, and they are held in high regards from everyone I've spoken to. added bonus, MDT is Canadian made.

Ben,

I am not exactly sure how it would work with the B&C M40 in a blind magazine setup, considering it is designed to work with removable magazines. I am also curious on why you want the blind magazine setup.

If you do decide to go with a B&C stock, Prophet River is the place to buy it from. Outstanding service and they normally have quite a few in stock.

Yup another vote for MDT, curious, why are you interested in a blind magazine?

Just guessing, but I'm going with its a hunting rifle and he doesn't want anything sticking out and apparently hinged floor plate isn't an option? Nothing ruins a hunt (or even a range trip, ask me how I know that one..) like leaving your mag at home in the other ammo can...

Edit - looking at the stock in question it looks like blind mag is the only option with a long action savage.

Suther,

You are right! I had ASSumed that because my short-action B&C M40 stock was setup for magazines, that the long-action would be too... wrong!

I am wondering if the helpful folks at Savage (or Savage Shooters.com) could recommend the parts needed to convert a hinged floor plate to blind magazine. Heck, B&C might even have that info.

Perhaps the easiest way might be to track down a long-action stock and rob the blind magazine parts from there. That's the approach I took to find the bottom metal that I needed.

On my 2 Savage 10 Law enforcement line firearms, I opted for Cadex chassis, love them, super stable but a little heafty. I am not hunting with those rigs. My 6.5 600 Rem wears an MDT LSS, and wouldn't hesitate to hunt with it, it's no heavier than the original synthetic stock

I've heard back from both bell & carlson along with savage arms. They both agree that a hinged floorplate mag setup will work with a bell & carlson stock for detachable bottom metal.
Unfortunately I do not see any stock options for savage long action w/detach bottom metal on the prophet river website.

Just found out that B&C doesn't make a savage long action with detach mag/hinged floorplate stock in the m40 which is the style of stock I am after.

As far as I can see, my only options are boyds or mcmillan since I am looking for a m40 style stock and I don't believe boyds makes one in this style.
