Not really sure.
Hello fellow CGN'rs

Well I'v always had a soft spot for the AG-42B, I think they are a nice looking rifle. Never owned one, nore held one but I do want to buy one.

I can get 6.5x55 ammo locally, however I'm not sure which ones have safe operating pressures for the gas system?.

What are some common quirks with this rifle, are they fairly reliable?.
Any common parts malfunctions/failures?. Do they eat soft point ammo or do they need FMJ?.

I figure the recoil is pretty soft with the ported muzzle, are magazines hard to come by, what about stripper clips?.

Whats a respectable price for a nice specimen?. $3-400.00 range?.

Thanks in advance for any interesting input you may have.

Take care for now.

EDIT: Sorry mods I guess this could be put in Milsurp?, I just considered these to be a main battle Rifle, since the 42b's were made in the 50's ect.

i've got a couple of these .
magazines are next to impossible to find .
i've built a couple mags from scratch , now that i have a tig welder i'm thinking that it might be easier to mod something built for the 308 round .

on the gas block there is a screw that is punched into place . remove this screw , and put a longer one in with a jam nut underneath . this will allow you to adjust the gas system so it doesn't throw the brass into the next country .

if you reaload , with a stock rifle , you need to use a fairly fast burning powder like imr 4064 .
if you use something like imr 4831 or slower what can happen is too much pressure can enter the gas system causing the action to try to cycle too soon , unlocking the action while it is still under pressure creating all sorts of nastiness .

modify the gas system and you are good to go .

the hakim rifle which is based on the ag42 has an ajustable gas system .

you are pretty much stuck with open sights on this rifle unless you cut the hell out of the stock .
on the left side of the action there are some threaded holes a person might be able to put a side mount on .
a person could also make a new upper handguard , and a set of clamps and clamp the scope directly to the barrel .

the point of impact shifts up and down when the barrel goes from cold to really hot , this is due to the gas tube .
other than that they are very accurate with just about everything i have fed it .

these rifles are made to use a 140 grain bullet , the swedish mausers are made to use the 160 grain bullet . ( using 160 grain bullets could possibly cause some issues with a rifle with a stock gas system .... ie too much pressure in the gas system )

the rear sight adjustment has 2 settings , one for 140 grain bullets , the other for 160's .

the only this i don't like about the rifle is the muzzle brake , i am seriously considering making a sleeve that goes over it so i can use my guns hunting without worrying about going deaf .

400 -500 for a near mint ag42 .

magazines when i have seen them are in the 100 - 140 range .

Very interesting, thanks for the input. What factory ammo's have you fed yours without issue?.

Sticking with iron sights is not an issue for me, I prefer them.

I have one that was refinished in a dark stain (thinking about stripping and refinishing it to it's original condition). Other than the brass flinging, she's a nice shooting, reliable weapon. Why do you need spare mags? Its supposed to be integral and loaded via stripper clips, like the SMLE....

I really like mine. Cool semi-auto :D. Soft shootin', very accurate and f**kin' LOUD.

A couple of things to remember.
- always keeps your fingers clear of the action. The bolt slams home with surprising speed and very little mercy. Think "Garand thumb" but ramped up a bit due to the wide open action. Very easy to get things pinched in there
- wear safety glasses (duh!!). Seriously, the system works on direct impingement. The second the bolt opens the gases vent over your head. With the AR, it's contained in the receiver. With the -42b, you feel every shot.

I've used Igman in mine. Only problem was I never found all my brass . Might have to modify the gas system to tame it down a bit.

(E)

Numrich (Gun Parts Corp) used to sell a Ljungman maintenance kit with spare extractors and other bit parts that were likely to fail. I haven't broken anything on mine yet but then maybe I don't shoot it enough.

I've shot mine with standard Swede military ammo, the same stuff for their M96 and M38 Mauser with no issues. Loads fine with standard Swede strippers .....aahh Swedish strippers :p

Between the AG42b and the Hakim I have more fun and get more looks from shooting the Hakim. You can see and feel the shock wave come off the muzzle!!!!! The swede more refined gentle recoil like a refined experienced Swedish stripper glistening in oil....Aaaaahhhhhh!
