Age of a shotgun

Hello,

My girlfriend just bought a Winchester Model 12 used from a guy here on CGN.
She was wondering how old it was. I know with some shotgun and rifles, they tell you the last two numbers of the year in the serial number. If this is indeed how its done, what 2 numbers am I gonna look at?

Don't know about the serial #'s. They were in production from 1912-1963. 2 million were made. 1st 2 years were 20 gauge only, in 1914 they came out with the 12 and 16 gauge and the 28 gauge in 1934. U.S. military used them in WW1, WW2, Korea and Vietnam.

There isn't a code built into the serial number that will tell you the year, but you can go this website http://oldguns.net/sn_php/windateslookup.php?file=win1912.dat
enter the serial number and it will tell you the year of manufacture.
