A few weeks ago, I sent the rifle to spend some time in the more than capable hands of a local gunsmith and fellow shooting enthusiast(CGN Victory) in order to build a Picatiny rail from a billet of steel. Not a problem he says.
A couple of weeks later, Robert brings me the gun. Nicely done! It's an aerospace quality piece of work, complete with counter-sunk allen head machine screws. The rail is "just long enough". The 18 year old- but good as day one SWFA Super Sniper 16x, 30mm tube optic is well known for repeatable precision work. My goal is to be able to shoot a 155 gr Sierra HPBT Match bullet well under 1 MOA with optice fitted. The rifle will be fitted with a backup micrometer sight from a No.4 Mk.2 Enfield. -I'll have to make a calibration card for it if the ballistics don't match up reasonably closely.
The rifle will be fed reloads, so if I can tune the load for a genesis of accuracy on sight setting combined with decent groups, then that would be a workable load for some of our Mil Surp rifle shoots..It won't be an F/TR gun, but if the year was 1960, this would be sort of a holy grail of target rifles in certain circles.
If you get off on Enfields, It's arguably the most fun you can have with a No.4 without killing an original pattern No.4 MK.2 or DCRA conversion. Not to say this rifle is as capable of shooting a V-Bull...Yet.
Once the weather improves, it will get a thorough workout in order to determine areas to improve upon. Maybe it will/ Maybe it won't. At the very least, it will be fun trying and I might even learn something in the process.
Here are a few mock up pix, prior to installing the NOS sniper cheek-piece.
Here a a few pix of the mock up. The scope rings will be replaced with a set of low 30mm units and a vernier aperture sight will back up the optics.
