In the process of getting a Tikka CTR in 6.5 and putting it into a KRG Bravo which uses AICS bottom metal.

This will be my first 6.5, I've shot 308 before but never reloaded and so I shot Federal Premium GMM 175gr.

My question is, has anyone had problems with COAL on the 6.5 match cartridges fitting into AICS pattern magazines? I know the Magpul AICS mags accept a shorter COAL than the Tikka CTR mags and some other AICS mags like Accurate-mag however I've heard that people dont like getting the accurate mags with the binding plate removed ( you can order them this way to allow a longer COAL ).

I may start reloading once I get this gun and the biggest question I have regarding the build is what AICS mag to get.
If all 6.5 factory match rounds will fit into the magpul and function then thats great!
However if I start reloading and increase the COAL, it seems like I may run into some problems.

I have heard that 6.5 does not get as drastically affected as other rounds like 308 when it comes to how far off the rifling the round is, so increasing the COAL to fit the rifle better may only have a very marginal effect.

If true, Ill probably just reload to whatever COAL federal GMM or Hornady match is currently at. I cannot find that info online though.

Magpul AICS mag COAL is 2.86"
Accurate mag is 2.875"
Tikka CTR should be 2.95"
Accurate mag with binding plate removed is 2.95"

These are the two brands of AICS mags that were recommended, any other suggestions are welcome

I had a Cadex R7 for a bit and shot Hornady ELD-M out of it. No problems fitting the factory match ammo in the mag - I think it came with an accurate mag.

No problems here either. Have different AICS mags from different manufacturers. All fit 308 and 6.5 just fine.

I have used the Magpul 10 rd mag, the Accurate mag and a factory AI mag, all should have no problem accommodating the 6.5 Creedmoor. I had some reliability issues with the four Accurate mags I used, it was also next to impossible to get 10 rounds in them. The AI mag was great, but pricey. I would buy the Magpul AICS pattern mag with confidence.

I'm running the Accurate Mags without the blinder, because they'll fit hand loads longer than my barrel will even chamber, so I'll never need to worry.

What gun/barrel are you using Tokay444?

Also thx so far for the info guys, so it looks like if I load to factory spec, the Magpuls will work fine?

Is loading longer even worth looking at?

Loading longer - or more specifically - for your chamber may be worth it.

Certain bullets like lots of jump, other bullets like a Jam.

I try to load with Berger Hybrids when I can and they are jump tolerant (10 thou off). Hornady BTHPs have a different ogive so they may like something else for example.

I've run Accurates, Magpuls and MDT. It's not really worthwhile, imo, to run the Magpuls as the COAL is shorter (as you know). As well, the +2round extensions for Magpuls are all terrible. Accurates with no binder plates run great and you can easily put mag extensions on them. I've been running the MDT 12 round mags though and honestly, they run just as well as the Accurates and fit 12 rounds in the same form factor that the Accurates fit 10 so it's kind of a no-brainer for me, at this point.

interesting, so not having the binder plate on and using factory ammo wont cause feeding/mag problems?

I'm not well versed on Tikkas so I'm not sure how the feed ramp is laid out but the only time people have issues with feeding in mags with no binder plates (in Rem 700s) is when the feed ramp isn't notched to allow the use of longer than SAAMI spec ammo, if that makes sense? You end up with a mag that can hold ammo with a longer COAL than the rifle can feed.

Binder plate won't cause any feeding issues. Binder plate magazines generally can run up to 2.870" and no-binder plate of 2.960". The no-binder plates in your rifle may require the feed ramp be notched which I don't recommend unless you really need. I run MDT 10 round no-binder plates because I have a factory Remington barrel and the lands are way up there. Once I get a new barrel next year I probaly won't need the length anymore.
