I saw these at Westrifle http://westrifle.com/online/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=15&products_id=416 and I wanted to check if anyone mounted one on his SKS. Specific questions are:

1) I am assuming it needs a mounting plates that requires drilling/tapping of the receiver.. Does it come with one?

2) If it doesn't come with one, which plate would it fit on and wtb?

3) Would it require any modifications of the stock?

4) Does it hold zero well? (I'd assume so if it involves drilling/tapping of the receiver)

5) Where on the receiver would the mounting plate be located?

6) Does it get peppered with ejected casings, thus requiring the ejector port mod?

Thanks in advance for the info. I'm already doing some mods on me SKS that involve drilling/grinding so I figured I might as well get one of these or something similar.

I have one of those on my VZ58 right now. You need a side rail on the receiver and it would have to be drilled and tapped on an SKS. My intention was to put it on my SKS but I could not for the life of me figure out how to drill through the steel. Its hard stuff. Machinist tools may be required for that.

The mount itself is quite nice but on an SKS it would place a regular lenght scope right over the ejection port so it would definitely need the ejector port mod or a shell deflector. This mount looks like it has mounting spots for a shell deflector built in... so that nice.

The side plate is a universal unit from what I can tell. I got mine on e-bay and it was labeled as being from UTG. I think it cost $12 and it did come with screws.

On my VZ58 this setup holds zero perfectly. I really like it. Didnt ever get to try it on an SKS but I assume it would work equally as well.

Hope that helps.

Thanks. That helps a lot. I was planning on using a shorty anyway, probably just a dot, max 1-4x.. Worst case scenario, ejector port mod. Waiting to hear from Westrifle if they have the side plates in stock. By the way to drill, it's case-hardened, so you will need a drill press even if drilling a centre-hole, pilot hole and final hole. I found that out while machining out that shoulder that blocks the insertion of the XCR mag. Once you're through the case-hardening it's smooth as butter.

Can you please send me a picture of that universal plate please or web link

Cheers

Al

No I don't think it is this one. Does not look like it will fit this mount.

They are sold by the same seller that also sells NCStar mounts that look identical to this Aim Sports mount. That may mean nothing. Almost tempted to buy one just for s&g but it's already pushing me close to the price of Choate mounts which are already proven performers.

Yup, thats the one I have. I havent installed but I did test it with the actual scope mount and it fit very tight. I like the choate mount but dont like that its not removeable. Now that youve explained how to get through the receiver with a drill... i may go back and try to install mine again.

remeber, measure twice drill once on that

Will do. I ended up ordering both the mount and plate from that ebay seller - when I asked whether it would work with Aim Sports, he told me he's never heard of them, there was a good chance it would, but he had NCStar mounts for which he knew for sure would work. 100% confidence beats 80% confidence even though I would have preferred to shop from a CGN sponsor. As for precision drilling.. I was able to drill out a pretty narrow shoulder on the receiver, so this is a much simpler job. Just wanna make sure I get the height right. As low as possible, unless there are any arguments against that?

It looks like the UTG plate ordered from that ebay seller will fit any mount that goes on an AK mounting plate so it would have worked with Aim Sports. Once you tighten down those Allen screws, she'll hold very tight. All in all, it's a good solution, a bit cheaper than Choate with no downsides that I can see. Love the fact that you can still use your stock irons or a peep. Another possibility: A 4x scope in the back and a red dot on a scout mount.

TRATSERIF - how about a pic of the instal - would like to see how it mounts to the sks before I jump in!

Will do as soon as it's done.. Got sidetracked a little.. A few setbacks with the XCR mag project that needed some finer machining to iron out, gonna see if I can get the mag catch done on Wednesday, testing over the weekend.. If everyhing goes well, the scope mount goes on sometime next week. Also life got in the way, work and some other commitments.

Very little time, the xcr mag hasn't made serious progress (still planning on finishing this weekend), but we got around to drilling and tapping the receivers on both SKS'... It wasn't easy, but wasn't hard either, in both cases the metal felt sticky, Mike chose to do it without annealing, but we had a quality tap so it wasn't torture either. I'll see if I can post up some pics tomorrow, this is more of a thread bump lol

Who am I kidding.. Couldn't resist lol First pic shows where I mounted the dovetail (about as far back and up as she'll prudently go) and the 2nd shows it with an el-cheapo reddot.. I will red loctite the dovetail bolts (the UTG dovetail also comes with nuts but the bolts barely go through the receiver wall so they won't interfere with anything and the nuts are irrelevant) and when I tighten the bracket screws (takes 2 different sizes of Allen keys for some reason that escapes me, it clamps down on the bracket real tight. This puppy won't move.

Actually it feels pretty good with the red dot or any other reflex sight and I'll be able to strip the rifle without taking off the mount. I can use stock irons at the same time and can mount an actual scope in a pinch too. I will report after the first range test.

Also did the ejector port mod (not visible on the pic), shaved the stock, blued the ground area, gave her a good cleaning, mounted and rough-sighted (using the irons) the red dot. I wouldn't put precision optics on this but it's great for a reflex sight.. Love the speed of acquisition.

For precision, definitely go with Choate
