I was thinking of getting an Aimpoint Comp ML2 scope to go on my 10.5 AR. I'd be using it for CQB and up to Mid range work. Distances ranging anywhere from 10m out to 200m. I know Aimpoint made the Comp C and M* series with a fixed 2x lens but has since discontinued them. There are however, some kicking around and I was wondering what the opinions were on the 2x Aimpoints. Feedback from people who have used them or have had them would be awesome.

1. Are they worth it or would you just go for a 1x?

2. If you had a 2x Aimpoint and had a choice of 4MOA or 2MOA, which would you choose?

3. Anyone else have an opinion?

Thanks!

I just figured the magnifier in a 3x would be too much for any CQB stuff as people have said with the 4x32 ACOGs. What makes them "wonky"? Has there been some reliability issues with these Aimpoints?

Whether 4MOA or 2MOA dots are better depends entirely on you... some people find the 2MOA dot hard to locate and hence slower than the 4MOA. But if you can spot them with equal ease, the 2MOA dot will make for better distance shooting.

And by wonky he is referring to the magnification at close range encounters.

So the early consensus looks like, no magnification Aimpoint for <200m. I know Brobee has sold some in the past and Shazam on this board has one as posted here:

Anyone else with a lower powered fixed optic, like say an ACOG (1.5-2) or IOR have any feedback on CQB shooting with the optic mounted? Is it really that different?

I'm not new to ARs, been shooting them for the last 4 years but primarily with irons (partly due to lack of funding for optics) but am now looking at alternatives. I recently got a 512 Eotech but the 2x caught my interest as I wasn't looking at spending another $300+ for the magnifier.

I have to mention that I have both the ML2 1x on a 14.5" M4'gery and its a perfect optic since it co-witnesses with the LMT rear and front post via the RAS II .. I also run a standard 4x ACOG on a 20" service rifle, and an Eotech on an 11.5"

the 2x Aimpoint and has its merits, but as a stand alone optic the Aimpoint 1x may be better for those with limitations. Keep in mind that the 3x magnifier and mount isn't cheap .... The 2x also magnifies whatever front opst you have so is better off as a scope ...
Ill dedicate this optic to the 16" midlength rifle .. It should be OK with that set-up. I doubt that I would be happier with a 1x Aimpoint as the best optic would be the S&B Short dot 1-4x (still saving up for that one ;) The DMS II and other made in China optics dont interest me at this point.

My 2 cents

I have an aimpoint M4 as my main optic right now, but not to long ago I picked up a budget Vortex Strikefire for one of my rifles. It came with a cheap 2x magnifier that screws onto the back. I was just going to toss it but figured I would give it a try. I found that I love it- I have no problem using it with both eyes open, I don't find it wonky at all. I guess the dominant eye takes over and 2x is not that much magnification. If I want a closer view I just close one eye and use it as a scope- I found this helpful with the 200 yard gong.
I used the Vortex with the magnifier at the last CQB clinic in Borden and it worked really well. I think I am just going to leave it on. The only downside is that the field of view shrinks significantly in the magnifier- I don't think the aimpoints have this problem. I was actually considering getting a 2x aimpoint myself.

Thanks for all the feedback so far...

...by wonky he [FPembleton] is referring to the magnification at close range encounters.

Thanks for clearing that up, I misunderstood . Thought there might have been issues that I missed.

My 2 cents

I'll take your .02 at 4 cents worth. Those look like some awesome set-ups.

Does your Eotech 65MOA clear the front post? I just got an IOR 3x illuminated optic for a 14.5 LMT Defender but I'm waiting on a riser mount to elevate the crosshairs above the front post so that I can utilize the reticles' full potential.

The 2x also magnifies whatever front opst you have so is better off as a scope.

Do you figure the 2x power makes your closer targets (<25m) "wonky"?

22ivan, You're making me lean back towards getting a 2x power now ;).

I should just get them both...
