Hello,

I have narrowed down my selection of optics down to two options:

Aimpoint Comp M4 and Magnifier

or

Trijicon ACOG TA11B

I was just wondering if anyone has used either of these setups. My shooting range will be majority within 200 meters but I would like something to shoot a little farther every now and then.

The think that has stuck be back so far is the price of the ACOG. It would be cheap to buy the Comp M4 and then when I get the magnifier compared to buying the ACOG.

I know they are both great products and I know that both those setup can shoot close distance and farther. I am just wondering if it is worth spending the extra money to get the ACOG vs the aimpoint.

Also anyone know where to get these products cheap?

Unfortunately outside of EE, you can't get these cheap.

I got my ACOG from Police Ordnance, they stock them and even have the TA31F but not the RCO models at this time.

I got my M4 aimpoint from The Shooting Edge.

You've got a couple of choices, the M4 has a QD mount with consistent Torque. If you get a Larue mount for the ACOG then you can switch.

The ACOG (mine is 3X) doesn't work well at room distances. You can always cover the front with a Butler Creek cap and then let the reticle superimpose with your left eye view, not great but good enough for room distances. I've never used a magnifier so I don't know what it's like but the dot will be magnified too. The glass on the ACOG is superb though, better than Leupold.

Realistically, most of us shoot at a range and for a rifle, thats usually 25y and out. The ACOG works better especially as we age and our eyes age too.

A more economical approach (just a bit more than an M4) is to get a leupold MRT 1.5-5X or Nighthawk 1-4X scope. Best of both worlds. Sure they're not a S&B short dot but for most of us, much more affordable and let's be honest, most of us shoot for fun on a range, not in a battefield for our lives. Those should work just fine for us.

Myself, I'm waiting for Trijicon to bring out their 1-4X 30mm scope this year. If it has a Chevron reticle with BDC, that would be my dream scope.

I am starting to lean towards the Comp M4 because of the price and the fact that I wont be shooting out at far distances 200+.

ACOG TA11B from Police Ordnance quoted at a little over 2000
Comp M4 from Daves Surplus around 900

Even if I bought the Comp M4 and then magnifier I would still have money left to get other accessories for the rifle.

How did you like your Aimpoint?
What did you feel was the maximum effective range?

What would be really nice to see from an ACOG would be a fully adjustable sight like the Horus Talon, something that doesnt have a set bdc calibration. Something where you pick your reticle and the rest is adjustable for your self.
