Hey guys

Looking for some suggestions from those who have more experience with the AR platforms and mid to high end close range optics. Got my BCL 102 in the other day and Im dying spend my money on a decent optic. Most of my shooting is done at an indoor 50 yard range or otherwise within 100 yards at a pit or open field. So far the aim point PRO 2 moa and eotech xps2 seem like good quality options that are reasonably priced but would like some suggestions. Any info would be appreciated

I've got an Aimpoint Pro on my AR. Great at 25 and 50. I'm able to get nice tight groups.

Even turned right down the dot completely obliterates the target at 100 so it is challenging - steel would be OK but good groups on paper are difficult (for me at least).

Personally I'd used some kind of magnification at 100..... I have a 3-9x40 Nikon P223 scope that works well for 100+. The BDC reticle (and app for your phone) is great.

Ive owned both and preferred the Aimpoint. It really is personal preference as they are both great. Battery life on the PRO dominates Eotech and I found myself more accurate at further distances.

I sold them both for a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x though, which I still would pick over the other 2 on an AR platform.

Yeah I have a Nikon Prostaff with BDC for my 10/22 and find the app is really accurate

Yes so far it seems to be more of a preference when it comes to the aim point vs eotech. Im leaning towards to aim point for ease of use and battery life as Im still fairly new to shooting so feel its better to learn on the more utilitarian scope rather than the slightly more complex eotech. I like the idea of the strike eagle but does it interfere with being able to grab the charging handle? I have a bushnell AR optic and with it set where I like it, its in the way when you go to pull the charging handle

You can get a cantilever mount that moves the scope 2" forward for better eye relief and it should not get in the way of the charging handle.

Having run both, I would say the best thing for you to do is try them out or atleast observe them first hand.

There's virtually no downfall to either of them. Some people might quote the "issue" eotech had regarding thermal drift of their optics, but I'd wager one of my rifles most of the internet rambling you'll here about that is from people who will never experience it.

I have heard some folks say they don't like the eotech reticle, they've found it too cluttered, some don't like the holographic because it appears fuzzy.but these are all subjective to the individual. Personally I really like the reticle, it's super fast for CQB shooting but that 1 moa dot makes for easy longer range shots. That being said I've never found either of my aimpoints to be "slow" shooting or less than accurate for reasonable distance shots.

Battery life can be a thing, in which case aimpoint takes the win by far. I've left both my comp ML3 on setting 6-7 for about 3 years now and it's still going, and I've done the same with my H1 but only for a few months now. Eotech are fine but the fact is the batteries won't last as long. For a casual shooter, this is largely a non issue.

Aside from that, its really going to come down to what you dig, either way I'm sure you'll be satisfied.

Coin toss perhaps?

thanks for the info, a coin toss seems to be the best way to decide at this point lol! Im leaning towards the aim point pro for the price point and easy of use but I have to admit the larger field of view and reticle have me really liking the eotech. Battery life isn't a huge issue for me considering I am a sporadic shooter, sometimes a few times a week and other times I got a month or so without touching a gun. Why is spending my money so hard... lol

I have both the PRO and an Eotech 518 on my ARs. As others have mentioned, both are fine at shorter ranges but once you start to reach out to 100 yards plus, accuracy goes way down. Overall, I prefer the PRO I think. Easy on and off and holds zero between mounts. The Eotech is,however, way less obtrusive-I think you get a better field of view either side of the sight when looking down range.

I have both and both are good choices. Aimpoint has way better battery life and is IMO, a better optic. Saying that the point of a red dot isnt for resting a bench and shooting small groups. but it s for quick target acquisition CQB shooting. Unless you shoot off hand CQB style, I would personally go with magnification.

I use to sell Aimpoints, now I sell EOTech due to a career change LOL.

Both have their advantages but it really does come down to personal preference.

You can't go wrong with either. If possible see if you can shoot with both. See if buddies or other range members have them.

They are both excellent CQB optics. I like others on here use both.

But... that's the wrong optic for the BCL 102. The 102 is an AR 308 rifle. Unless you're planing on changing out the handguard along with other weight saving parts, then you shouldn't be going with a CQB optic. In stock form the 102 isn't a CQB carbine. It's setup out of the box as more of a DM rifle. With the old style AR10/AR308 frame it will be inherently heavy and bulkier compared to an AR15.

Go with a decent 2-7 or 3-9X scope. I prefer the 3-9X as it gives you enough magnification at 100 yards for good target work. At 3X I can actually still shoot with both eyes open for up close. Plus the 3-9X tends to be in the most affordable range. The Burris E1 is a good budget choice for these. At least when you could find them on sale for $200 they were. I have a legit AR 308 carbine/reece style rifle in my DPMS GII recon which utilizes a smaller frame and can be easily brought down to 8 pounds just by changing the handguard. The 102 will require a minimalist stock along with a handguard swap and maybe even a barrel change to hit the weight loss of the GII. Even then it will be bulkier and not handle as well. With that GII carbine I use a Burris E1 3-9X. I will likely also be using an E1 3-9X for my 102 when it gets here. It's just a good all around scope magnification that gives you a lot of options.

Even though you're shooting at close range now, I would still go magnified optic for this rifle. A magnified optic on low magnification can still be used up close fairly quickly. Yet it also gives you the ability to accurately shoot much farther. Today, indoors, gravel pits. Tomorrow fields, 100 yard plus ranges.

The plus side if you do get an Aimpoint or Eotech... you can later swap it over to the AR15 carbine you will eventually be buying. :welcome:

You have made some valid points and I agree to some extent. A CQB style optic probably isn’t the best option for this rifle but as my gun collection grows I’m realizing I have a decent selection of scopes that I could put on to do the job but not a single red dot/holographic sight. Up until now I haven’t had a reason to justify a 600$ plus red dot sight but now that I have more than just a 22 and sks to mount it on I feel I should make the jump before I buy another scope. A 2x7 would be a great option that I don’t have lying around but there’s somethings pulling me towards buying a quality electronic sight

Cheers
