Was wondering what people's thoughts are on this optic? I plan on putting it on a xcr l for the range and maybe the odd coyote hunt. Any idea what would be too far to shoot with this with out a magnifier.

You can always add a magnifier to it for longer range.

I've heard of some shooters buying cheaper "generic" brand magnifiers and having good luck with them since it's just for magnification and doesn't need to hold zero. But then again, who knows what kind of quality lenses and coatings are on those. If it's not critical, you can probably pick one up for $130.

Here's a Vortex VMX3 magnifier behind an Aimpoint.

I had an ml3 (very similar) with a larue flip to side mount and magnifier.
I found under magnification that the dot was "bean shaped". I did like to 2 moa dot.
With practice and a proper zero, 300 yards should be very obtainable. Some will say even further, but that's what I felt comfortable with.

I did find that hold overs/hold under are not as precise with the dot though. @ 300, the dot becomes 6 moa and under magnification it can become a little difficult.

For the cost, i've since upgraded to a acog.

On the range, too far is where you can no longer effectively see what you are hitting. As for the coyotes, I think I'd be hard pressed to take an important shot with my 2moa-dot Pro beyond ~150 yards. It's a great optic, though.

Cheers,
Ryan

magnifiers on reddots are a stop gap, not a solution. If you foresee more shots fired beyond ranges that you feel comfortable and capable of achieving good hits without magnification, then you need a different optic. Flip to sides have poor eye relief and poor fields of view. As mentioned, the dot can become distorted and doesn't offer a very precise aiming point. Magnifiers are/were intended to P'ID of targets more than extending ones effective range.

As for your original question, I have one and love it. can't go wrong for the money. its seen action on my AR, .308 and my 12 gauge. holds zero well and the mount is pretty good. Personally its great value and stands up to red dots in higher price bracket. I find magnifiers are a little combersome and serve no value in my ability to get hits. If you want somthing with magnification I would just get a scope in the 1-4 power range. Just my opinion, happy shooting!
