Hi there

I'm looking at buying a red dot for my WK180C and was wondering about getting an Aimpoint comp m4, but boy are they expensive, I was wondering if someone could help me understand whether they are worth it for someone who hunts, competes in multigun and does general target shooting.

You are paying for years of iteration and flawless reliability in all situations.

Is it worth it is the big question there are alot of aimpoint clones that make it 95% of the way to a real one at a fraction of the cost.

I don't find that the "clones" are 95% of the way there. Any actual clones are usually total garbage, although there is some fairly good competition from Trijicon, Holosun, and others. They're worth the price if you value having the best and most reliable red dot available.

Holosun are the clones im referring to they legit cloned the entire micro line.

I have noticed that aimpoint sights are often advertised as being "always on" for five to eight years. I think this might contribute to the general reliability since there would be fewer potential points of failure, like with switches and motion detectors to turn the sight on and off. (i.e simpler is better)

They are very simple and robustly built. I have one of the first red dots from the late 80s (Aimpoint 2000) and it’s still working (now mounted to my rabbit hunting 22). The micro line is a gold standard and the PRO a fantastic value if you don’t want to jump to the M4.

I spent time with a micro T2, didn't really feel it was worth the dough compared to a cheap Bushnell even though I know it's better and bomb proof, also spent some time with an EOTECH, I like LPVO's better personally.

Same, I also have astigmatism so it takes the shine out of red dots.

Personally I struggle with a red dot. They don't work so well for me as I see all the refraction across the glass. My vote goes for a low magnification optic like a 1-5X with no need for a battery. But, I have a good friend in Australia that has had an older model Aimpoint from the late 80s or early 90s still mounted on his primary deer rifle. He loves it and has stayed loyal. He has almost swayed me towards a Micro for my 375.

I also like LPVO's, however they weigh a lot more when you include the weight of the rings compared to the compact reddots like the vortex crossfire, also cost four times as much

OP - great question. I always wanted to ask the same question but don't really feel qualified to comment as I have never owned an Aimpoint. But maybe all you folks can both educate and sell me on this, because...

I have a Holsoun HS515GM and HS515CM. Yes, I know they are not Aimpoints but even on an elementary level, I don't see why something can improve on these because...

1. Between the dot and the circle reticle, it is easy on the eyes. Nice sharp dot/reticle. I have found it helps improve my really elementary shooting skills.
2. People say Aimpoints are reliable. Are these Holosuns not? My experience has been excellent.
3. Battery life is great. Rated for like 50,000 hours. My 515CM has solar power backup
4. Shake awake feature is awesome. I don't have to turn it on. And it turns off after 10 minutes (unlike my former Vortex at 12 hours)
5. My 515GM has glass flip covers, which I never flip since I can see right through
6. The 515GM is military grade housing. Dropped it, no issues
7. Everything is nice and crisp through the glass
8. The quick detach mount is very nice and handy.

Now I am certainly NOT saying mine is better than any Aimpoint...but never owning an Aimpoint, what would it have over what I quite enjoy in my Holosun and would be worth the extra money?

That being said, on my WK, I have a Sig Sauer Romeo 5, and it seems to do the job though not as many bells and whistles as the Holosun.

yes we re a few that tried red dot and scope are better even more heavy ... astigmatism is a killer for most red dot. funny the ones on scope work way better ...

Buy a holosun and spend the resst on ammo.

I have astigmatism and I don’t find red dots difficult to use. YMMV. Green is better for me but I don’t know if this has anything to do with astigmatism, a few buddies agreed when we did side by side cheap colour switching reflex sights
