Aimpoints, how to tell the fakes from the real?

I went to a gun show today and saw some aimpoints, comp2 I think 4moa, with a ring for mounting for under $200. I was a bit tempted, but how does one tell if it really an Aimpoint? I followed my rule and didnt buy what I didnt know. they appeared to be new in box. Could someone tell me how to distinguish the good from the bad? Thanks.

The knockoffs are visually better these days, complete with fake Aimpoint markings. In your case the price gives it away. There's no way you can find a Comp M2 with mount for under $200 in Canada. They're not even that cheap in the US.

I seen them there too, I would say they were knockoffs due to the fact that they were being sold in a plain white box

Not necessarily a good indicator. My Aimpoint Comp M2/M68 CCO (US Army issued) came in a plain white box. Foam insert with 2 batteries, QRP mount, allen key, rubber lens covers and a Tenebrex Killflash.

Wait a minute.......plain white box!? Maybe mines the fake?! Nah, don't think so, haven't seen any knock-off Killflashes (yet).

The clones I've handled aren't the same quality as the real deal, but it would be hard to tell if you didn't have both together or had some experience with the real thing. Also, the clones seem to be not entirely parallax free. Hard to spot, but it's noticeable in the ones I've seen.

Of course they're knock-offs, but the quality is there for the price. Many CGN'ers have used them without failure, and I guaranty mine for 90 days against failure and defects.

I seriously doubt that there are lots of US Army optics being sold retail in Canada. The Aimpoint product comes in a colourfull Aimpoint box with Aimpoint manual.

Dont anyone get jumpy now! Im just learning here. The quality of the ones I handled looked good. Not being on a gun and firing it for a few hundred rounds I cant really tell durability. On most guns I am sure they would handle quite well. Probably several guns I own too.

However, I usually like the products I buy to have the right name on it. (though I suppose there could be two Aimpoint companies in the world making the same kind of product.) Besides, I would be pissed if I bought a product that I thought was an original product and then found out it was a knockoff.
The fella selling didnt tell me it was or wasnt the original company Aimpoint, though I didnt press him on it at all. I was interested but I hadnt done my home work so I wasnt buying. The price made me suspicious as I am familiar with TSE pricing.
Not knocking any one, just trying to learn. To each his own. (Or the nockoff equivelent there of.) :D

i like my aimpoint knockoff.... I have it on my nailer :)
works great and perfect cowitness with my iron sights.... since this picture I have replaced the mount with a factory aimpoint ring that is better quality.

You openly sell counterfeit goods ?

It's one thing to sell an item as a clone or copy...but when the "Brand Name" is stamped on them it becomes a totally different matter.

I'm happy with my knock-off... it's been holding up to shotgun slugs for over a year now... I wouldn't trust my life on it, but for zombie plinking it does the job.

The only thing I don't like about the knock-off is there flip up cover... not very sturdy! By the way, you can get them for under $100 in the dealer section...

my was the biggest POS I ever wasted my money on.......and if they crash you won't get a new on or get it fixed..........my was killed by a 10/22....

All the new factory Aimpoint scopes have "Aimpoint" roll marked in the tube, no paint. The big showy painted on Aimpoint is also a give away. Of course it also violates trademark protection.

As I've said before the clones where created with only one purpose in mind: to replicate the Aimpoint series of sights through external appearance and limited functionality, while the real sight is a precision engineered, mil-spec product that has had thousands of man hours of research and testing invested into it's design, has undergone a series of stringent survivability tests and is in use with many military formations worldwide. Plus, by buying cheap Hong Kong knockoff's you contribute to the destruction of the manufacturing segments in Europe and N. America. Hope this helps.

Oh, and the "replicas" with Aimpoint actually printed on them are an infringement on the copyright the Swedish company Aimpoint AB actually has on the name and are therefore counterfeit goods likely omissed by Canada Customs. They would normally be seized and both the importer and manufacturer fined.

get off your high horses..... the clones being out there do nothing to #### the sales of real aimpoints up. frankly if I had not bought the aimpoint clone I would have bought nothing and left open sights on there.

I will buy a real aimpoint, I have owned 3 real ones in the past as well as eotech, acog and most of the other high end glass.....

blah blah blah..... go home if you don't like it, frankly for the value it is the best $100 I spent. next gun it is going to be mounted on is a 10/22 :)

If you go in that direction, why would you by a M305 from the Chinese. Buy it from Springfield and stand on your principles, less $2000 from you pocket.

The majority of gunnutters have no illusion that they are buying a real Aimpoint for $100 but like Westicle said " frankly if I had not bought the aimpoint clone I would have bought nothing and left open sights on there". Not all of us can afford $600-$700 for the real thing but at least we have the look and possibly a half desent red dot.

Still amuse me how airsoft guys buy the real optics, and real gun owners buy the clones... ;)

I guess real firearm owner are confident enough in their manhood to buy whatever they fell like :D

And I don't think the sales of knockoff is hurting Aimpoint as a company all that much their bread and butter are military contract (It's a different story for the stores and resellers...),. If anything, the knockoff are a good introduction to "new-potential" real Aimpoint buyer. I personnaly wouldn't have spent $500 for a real Aimpoint just to test...

Now that I'm taking a liking to them, maybe one of those Burris would be a nice upgrade (and still cheaper then the Aimpont)
