looking at getting my kid a air gun,he is 12 yrs old.ive seen the ones they have at bass pro shop, some of them shoot about 1000 fps with .177 pellets.is this a little to fast for a kid his age maybe.what can you kill with these rifles, large birds like crows,or raccons maybe.how far do they shoot, and how far do they shoot accuratly.all i had when i was younger was a pellet gun that shot about 500 fps,and info is greatly appreciated.thanxs

Careful. He is only 12. Stay under 500fps. If he gets caught with an over 500 'firearm', registered to you, you will be the one that gets hung. Same goes for hunting with it. If however, he will only be using it supervised, any cheap starter airgun would be good. Ruger airhawks, crosman phantoms etc are all great starter guns. If you want something that will last for years, consider a Slavia 630 or similar. Crows would be the biggest game I would shoot with an airgun. Racoons are tough. Leave the coons for the rimmies or a powerful .22 shooting hard and at close range. HTH.

A good gun for someone still growing up (and an adult actually) is the Baikal izh-61. It's adjustable for LOP, it has a 5 shot magasine, it has a great trigger, and is pretty accurate for about $150.00 cdn.

My son had a Diana since he was 9. They are very reliable & last a long time. They are not the cheapest buy very good quality. If you get one over 500 fps, you need to supervise him shooting. Under 500 fps & he can legally go off in the woods himself. Now my son just turned 12 & I got him a CZ 455 LUX .22 for his birthday. He goes to the range with me quite often. By the way, you can get a .22 for the price of some pellet guns.

I would go for the Crossman Phantom 500 .22. Pretty accurate and cheap, plus you can get the 500 non PAL version and when he grows up you can mod it to 800 fps(PAL rated) really easy. Lots of power and pretty cheap , parts are easy to find too.
