I'm looking for a air rifle that I can use for basement practice when I can't get outside and use my .22LR. Basically I would be using to to practice offhand shooting and would prefer it to come with a good set of open sights for practice with them, and be railed for later scopes.

TBH I want to get into smallbore .22 silhouette shooting so I need practice. Dry firing my .22 CZ (with snap caps and the rifle is designed to be dry fired) works but I still want to be able to shoot to confirm things.

So after a bit of research I found that the Daisy 953 rifle works for many people. As much as I like the Daisy 853C I don't think I can justify the price increase, even though it has pretty much all I want (unless you guys really recommend it). With the 953 I can use my .22 CZ rings and williams peep sight and maybe even the BRNO match sights so long as I get the correct front globe.

My other option so far is the Slavia 630. I love my CZ so I expect the rifle will be well built, it looks like a handy rifle, has an adjustable trigger/sights and although it is $70 more expensive at D&L Airguns than the 953 it looks more like a full size rifle. I have heard that spring rifles do not make for good practice rifles, but is this the truth or internet rumors?

I personally don't want to spend a lot of money on the rifle since I may only use it during winter during the worst storm and cold snaps. The Daisy seemed about right, but I want to hear your guys opinions on these two rifles or any other you may have. Also I am currently looking only at D&L Airguns, so if you have any other good sources please tell me.

Over on the Canadian Airgun Forum guys rave about the 953 for something like this. You should get one hole groups with practice at 10-15 yards from what I hear.

A piece of heavy cloth over a dowel draped so the ends hang free will catch sub 500fps pellets nicely for a long time without any mess.

Also you can save your pellets if you do a lot of shooting and give or sell the lead to a muzzleloader who casts his own lead.

Thank for the info on the Canadian Airgun Forum. After reading some stuff on that forum and others I think I will be going with the 953. I still really like that little CZ springer, but I think I will wait and see if I can find it cheaper somewhere else or used at some point. At least I know what to look for now.

On last question though... do you know if you can put the same aperture sights as on the Daisy 853C on the Daisy 953? Either way I should be able to put a Williams peep sight on it for now that I ordered for my .22 CZ.

Also thanks for the backstop idea. I was going to just to buy a cheap trap, but that sounds like it works better.

You may also want to check out the AR2078. Comes with target sights and built on an outstanding QB78 frame but with a target style stock. Just click on the forum STORE banner at CAF and go look a Snipers's offers. Price is a little over 200......uses co2 and most of them are deadly accurate.

Just a thought

I was in the same boat, ended up buying a walther lgr, works great. Spent a little more, but got a rifle that shoots 100 pellets through a hole no bigger then the end of a pencil (actually quite a bit smaller)so when I miss I know it's me. Also having a great trigger is sure nice when trying to time the wobble.

Slavia air rifles are nice, but the trigger is heavy and the recoil pretty robust.

I think the CZ630 Slavia is better suited for what the OP wants. The FWB300S is too heavy, IMO. Beautiful rifle, but sold mine so somebody else with skills commensurate to the accuracy of the 300S can enjoy it.

Got a couple of very slightly used CZ630s to replace the FWB, turned out to be amazing accurate little airguns, and no need to register too.
