I've been thinking of getting a PAL required air rifle and have been contemplating the Ruger Air Hawk @ 1000fps as advertised in the SIR/Cabelas catalog. I like it for it's iron sights and economic price but as always, no chance to 'fondle' before purchase with mail-order so I am looking for opinions, experiences or other suggestions.

thanks

I have 5 air guns in my collection and they all shoot between 750 to 1250 fps. But they are PCP rifles not springers. I tried springers and found them to be a pain in the ass to use. After my first pre-charged pneumatic (PCP) gun, I was sold. I use a scuba tank to fill them and I get between 20 and 150 good shots depending on which gun I'm using as they all have different size air reservoirs. Think of them as CO2 guns with giant cartridges that never run out.

I have a
.22 Talon
.22 Falcon FN-19
.22 Falcon FN-8
.22 BSA Ultra and the
.22 Sumatra I just purchased. They all require a PAL.

Check out airgunsource.com in Canada. They have a good selection and good prices. I just bought a .22 Sumatra from them yesterday and got it today in the mail. What a gun.:dancingbanana: 1250fps. Man does it hit hard when you use a 30grain pellet. At full power it requires hearing protection as its louder than a .22LR. BUT, I can turn the power down to shoot in the basement :D:D Using s .22LR in the basement would be a no-no.

I just can't say enough about PCP guns and I'm surprised more people aren't using them. It's probably the initial investment for a scuba tank ($200) but after that, refills are $6.00 and it lasts a long time. One other plus. PCP guns, in general, are extremely accurate. .5" groups at 50yds are the norm with these guns but like most rifles you do need to find out what ammo it likes. After that there's no stopping you.

Take some time and check them out. You won't be disappointed.

The cost of setting up a PCP is a big factor for first timers.
However, now it is MUCH more affordable with the Benjamin Discovery.
I have been playing with one for a few months now, and they are a great little entry PCP gun.

Your not kidding. I just checked out the Benjamin Discovery. What a nice gun and that is a great price. There's a couple of Chinese guns (BAM) out there that have pretty good pricing as well but I think I would trust the Benjamin Discovery over the Chinese stuff for a first time buyer.

I have a Crosman Quest 1000 in .177. Lots of fun and a great rifle to plink with. The advantage of owning a powerfull pellet gun is that it can be fired in semi-urban settings where a .22 would not be tolerated. Pellets lose there "umpf" pretty fast and don't pose the problem of the dangerous within 1 mile stuff you get with a .22.

This pellet rifle smacks with authority at a good 50 yards and more. It'll go through any tough vegetable can with ease. Actually at close range, it's so powerfull that a can hardly moves as it whistles through!
