What are the closest things to AK-47, that I can own in Canada?
Not counting the 858 (I've heard they are different from AK-47 internally), I want to know if there are any that could be purchased new. Or surplus...

You can rig up an SKS to look something like an AK (with the 30/5 rnd mag).

Unless you've got the 12(x), your basically out of luck. Any variants of the AK are prohibs, as well as any replicas/semi-autos. The only reason the 858 and 58 are legal is because they are of a different design. So, under our present laws, you're not going to get anything that is internally or externally the same as the AK47.

dang....
You know, all the negative publicity aside, I always thought that AK-47 is the most prolific design of our time. Maybe it's not the most accurate, maybe not the most pretty, and it's not the most comfortable thing to carry. But they ARE jack of all trades, and they can take abuse like nohingelse...
It's a shame that when people see AK-47, all they see is image of terrorists...

What they should see is the engineering genius of the Russian people (and I AM NOT opening up the MP44 heritage debate). Kalashnikov developed perhaps the toughest rifle ever made. I don't understand why people knock its looks. To be honest - I always found that the AK is the best looking black rifle out there. But - as an AK lover, I can offer my 2 cents for your dilemma - buy a CZ858 (or VZ58 if you really want it to be as milspec as possible). I bought an 858, and although its not exactly a Kalashnikov (or really at all internally), if you're an AK fan, you'll love the gun. Its my fav gun right now, and I'm worried that the Ruger 10/22 I just tricked out may end up becoming a safe queen because the new object of my obsession is my CZ.

I've always admired the AK for its ability, looks and most of all, its duribilty. Even though the CZ/VZ aren't AKs they're really the best alternative. And with some real wood on there they don't look all that different! I've had many people call a CZ-858 an AK47 while looking at pictures I've sent them.

I know someone got some real wood bits in a replacement parts kit he ordered but other then that I think you'd have to make them yourself, but really how hard would that be if you had some tools eh?

Check with Wolverine..they may have some I think??..Numrich has VZ wood as well but quite well used for the sets I've seen..The Kalashnikov is one of the best there is in smallarms systems...

I'm thinking about getting a 858, after I get myself a M305. If I can't have AK, then by the lords, I shall have something that closely resemble it.
By the way, after 858, I think I'm getting a SKS.

There is a valmet hunter in the exchange forums...and I have seen these things tricked out to 'look' like RPDs. Sure you could bring it close to an AK within regulations. Last I looked (15 mins ago) it was still there, in the sporting arms forum I believe.

This is my AK-47...a Busse American Kansai with 47cm (18") blade..legal to own in Canada :)

Valmet M78's and Hunters, but good luck finding one, and if you are lucky enough to find one expect to pay a hefty premium...

There are none except for the front sight.... Do we say MP44 was a FAL just because how the butt-stock looks like? AK and MP44 are totally different inside and if you remove the front site out of the picture, you will see they totally different.

Anyway, you can own in Canada only Valmet that is non-restricted... Nothing new you can get, even Vepr which is not AK, but uses some parts from it and some solutions...

I think you can try to get Nikonov rifle here :) it's totally different inside, but Russian army is moving ahead with replacing AK with it (AN-94)...

I can get AK in like new condition in US for freaking $200... :(
