AK vs AR vs FAL

They’re interesting tests to be sure, however I cannot think of any practical reason that you would have your rifle basically drowned in mud and then have to quickly dump the whole magazine. Most all of us are not using these rifles in a war and if you are, you’re stuck with what you’re issued.

It’s cool to see how easily the mechanisms can be gummed up, but since most firearms owners baby their rifles with gun socks and cases and generally handle them with care, it’s not what I would consider a “practical” test...

I beleive they also did Brownells retro ar10 and it also passed with flying colours.

edit here it is...

I watched video of russian gunsmith called "the top 5 worst AKs" and as far as I remember the worst were Iraqi, Chinese, American, and 2 other I forgot about... However, no matter how good or bad design is, the production quality can make a huge difference.

Those tests are laughable. I can post russian videos where they show how ARs fails and AK wins all possible tests. Those russian videos are even more laughable and for really stupid audience and surprisingly(!) coming from Kalashnikov company.

@greentips I know you have a solid knowledge about modern firearm, how can you share those video? what's the point of them? Anyone can make a video where firearm A works just fine, while B fails. Problem is that another guy could make another video where B preforms just fine, while A miserably fails. Both videos will be true, both will be just a scratch on what is considered "military system of selecting and testing of firearm".

People who trust those video have no slightest not even remote understanding on how military firearm is designed and tested and developed, but yet they tend to believe the first video they see and make very broad conclusion. Now if you add personal bias, be it AR or AK, that creates two opposite poles of equally uneducated public bashing one system while turning blind eye to the flaws of their favourite.

Just a single thought, out of dozens things my mind screamed when I saw these video first time: "Do you have authentic AK-47 or 74 or whatever you want to test?" No? So that's the end of the test. Finita. Finale. What's the point of testing some frankenbuild by drunk Oregon gunsmith? It's even remotely not a test, it's just horsing around.

These tests have nothing to do with military selection. These guys aren't claiming the AR is a better military rifle the the AK, they are simply doing the same test over with different firearms for fun. They waren't even big fans of AR's in the first place.

I think you're missing the point. This thread seems to be in retort to claims that "because AK have cleaning rod, AK better".

Let me drop that quote that TVPP used again:

"The AK is more accurate than people think, and the AR more reliable."

Southwest desert mud is more like a concrete slurry or a grinding paste than the typical mushy wet soil that most people think of an mud.

Its gritty as hell yet is still able to flow well enough to get into things.

The way Ian and Karl apply it also not something you're likely to encounter in the real world, as in if you're running around in the Arizona desert and it starts raining hard enough to create enough mud to fully plop a rifle into, you're at the point where there's bound to be flash flooding and easily enough water available to at least rinse away the worst of it.

The guys who made that mud video are true shooting enthusiasts. More so than 99.9% of gun owners.

They love ALL guns. They shoot and enjoy all guns, from any time period.

They have a great selection of videos if you have some time to kill.

i find funny all those tests because there is mostly no soldiers that is choosing the tools given to them so the debate is more for fun not for end users lol.

now the ak rod is a funny thing ...

^ he’s got a point. Nobody is trying to influence your purchase, it’s just a scientific test performed as consistently as possible with the best they can come up with. I bet if I did the same thing to my Valmet, it would still fail for the same reasons.

If you ever get that much mud on your rifle, you are doing everything wrong. Regardless I really enjoy the in range and forgotten weapons series. They are great and highly informative.
