As part of my preparation for the MGM Ironman it was easy to identify my shotgun skills as a weak spot. Juggling shells into a tube isn’t something I’ve trained for in the past, but I’m much more accustomed to indexing magazines and activating bolt releases.

Enter the Akdal MKA 1919: A semi-auto, magazine-fed, 12 gauge shotgun that replicates the controls of an AR-15. These Turkish shotguns have come in as an alternative to the Saiga so popular in 3 gun matches, but of course prohibited here in Canada (deadly ak.) With some love and elbow grease, the Mka 1919s can be made into pretty stellar competition guns.

I bought this one from IrunGuns, and after a few weeks of dithering around it showed up last night. I'm pleased that they're bringing in the XN model, which apparently has a number of small improvements.

The first thing I would encourage any new owner to do is strip the junky plastic sights off and dispose of them. They're hideous, and poorly made, and aren't even a real AR-15 peep sight. Just an weird glock-ish dovetail. There is a proper flattop rail underneath where your optics can find a home.

I opted for a Vortex Razor red-dot, as its got excellent brightness, weighs essentially nothing, is tough enough to take slug recoil, and I already had one sitting in the safe. It also sits and nice and low on the rail, which pairs well with the Mka 1919′s slightly angled A2 stock. The cheek weld is right where I want it.

That simple change is enough to drastically change the feel of the gun. But the stock 5 round magazines won’t get you far in US competition. I picked up a pair of pinned ten rounders to practice with. These are larger than any AR-15 mag you’ve ever used. The single stack 10 rounders are bricks, that extend well below the gun. I shudder to imagine how the custom 25 round magazines must feel.

I’m looking forward to testing the reliability of this, and putting slugs, buck, and target all through it.

My initial impressions are that I made the right choice with the Mka 1919. It’s the kind of shotgun I can get excited about pouring rounds through. But! It is restricted, so its a gamer gun for sure. We'll see what sort of ATTs I get issued in the future.

You succumb and ended up getting one, good for you.

I did the same tossed all the plastic parts immediately - handle, front-site, handguard and then took a bigger step and chopped off the stock.

MGM Ironman is on my bucket list. Looking forward to hear about your experience shooting at that event.

I'm still shaking my head that this was considered an AR15 variant by the RCMP lab... Just another example of why they shouldn't be able to classify anything.

Cheers
Jay

Is the stock standard AR? Or is it some propritary thing?

EDIT: NM, I looked closer at the picture.

How are you planning on chopping it?

I always wanted one. Do you have any instock? I dont care for quad rails or anything, just a simple solid 1919 with adjustable stock.

Nice review :)

FYI we will be bringing in quad rails for these guns and we have something else up our sleeves... mag fed and should be non restricted... the California model and a few receiver kits will arrive in Canada in a week for testing and to submit for FRT number..

Good frickin luck on that one....Sandpaper Bob's puppets will restrict it on looks alone.:(
The goofs will still insist that it's an AR variant....Tah-Dah.

Just confirmed that my ATT is good for the local skeet range! The old time trap shooters are going to flay me though :D

Wow. So I've got a bit of a sob-story here. Lets start with a picture:

Ms TVPP and I wanted to spend a day outside (snow's melting) and I have the new Mka 1919 to try out. She's still unhappy with the shell lifter on her Hatsan, so I said we'd rent her a dedicated trap gun.

I called the CFO on Thursday to check if I needed an STATT. The woman there told me that the Calgary Firearms Centre in DeWinton was on their approved list for restricted firearms and that as long as I had the registry cert for my Mka 1919 it would fall under my LTATT and no STATT.

We were there early on Sunday: just about 11:50. I told them I had a new gun to pattern, and that we'd want to rent Ms TVPP a gun when it was time to start shooting. They said that wasn't until 1 oclock, so we ran into Okotoks for lunch.

We got back to AHEIA at quarter after one, and they told me to pattern my gun at the far end and that after that we'd buy ammo and rounds and the rental.

I zeroed in 3 shots (first time for me!) and went back. I know its not a conventional skeet gun, so I keep it cased and locked anytime I'm carrying it anywhere. We go in, and I buy 2 boxes of breast cancer shells, 2 rounds of trap, and $5 to rent Ms TVPP a BT-99. I mention to the woman at the register that my shotgun isn't your standard skeet gun. I don't want to just waltz out on the range without giving anyone a heads up. She says:

"Oh, is it one of those tactical ones? In that case our manager, Martin, will need to take a look at it."

So we go outside and he brings Ms TVPP her BT-99 and we open up the case. No hesitation, no questions about registration info, action, barrel length, or anything else he says:

"You can't shoot that here."

So I respond disappointed:

"Really? I understand that its unconventional, but it has a 20" barrel and I cleared this with the CFO."

He says:
"Yeah, I've had to shut down all this tactical stuff. We just can't allow it anymore."

The problem apparently is that tactical guns are too loud, which puts them at risk of breaking noise bylaws and getting complaints with the neighbors.

That's all well and good, except that I've shot an 18.5" Hastan pump gun there before with zero hassle (see photo above)

He offered to loan me one of their range guns, which didn't work out (I said "okay sure" and he thought I said no) After a half hour of being ignored I said I wanted a refund, and got yelled at as a result. I was reimbursed for the trap tickets and Ms TVPP's gun rental, but was told "ammo is non-refundable." I left the club with a bad taste in my mouth and feeling disappointed that I wasn't doing any shooting that day.

But my complaint/concern isn't so much a customer service one as it is a policy one.

1. If there is a barrel length restriction: why isn't it posted publicly and enforced uniformly?
2. If refusing tactical shotguns is a personal policy of the site manager, does that reflect the organizational policy of AHEIA? If so, I'm disappointed that they're on the wrong side of this fight.

To be clear:

I was not asking to shoot with anyone besides Ms TVPP. I get that entrenched skeet shooters don't like my guns. It happens all the time and I am always willing to walk a little further to shoot on a field where I won't ruffle any feathers.

I was not asking to load or discharge more than the single shot at a time as established in the rules of trap.

I was not looking to start a fight. I genuinely believed having consulted with the CFO that I would be good to shoot there.

To sum up: I bought this gun to compete at the MGM Ironman. I need to be able to hit clays with it, and I'm disappointed that my local facility doesn't want me there. But frankly, if they're going to judge a gun based on its color: I don't want to shoot there.

Here's some Arfcom data on shotgun sound:

Table 2. SHOTGUN NOISE DATA (DECIBEL AVERAGES)

.410 Bore 28" barrel 150dB
26" barrel 150.25dB
18 " barrel 156.30dB
20 Gauge 28" barrel 152.50dB
22" barrel 154.75dB
12 Gauge 28" barrel 151.50dB
26" barrel 156.10dB
18 " barrel 161.50dB

It's unfortunate but not isolated to your club. I read in the rules that a trap and skeet club in my area put an ixney on tactical style shotguns as well regardless of barrel length. It's more of a fudd rule than anything but is a definite piss off when one wants to blast some clays.
