Like any good government document, the Alberta Hunting Regs always seem somewhat....convoluted to me at times, escpecially when I am looking for clarification.

Just wondering if you guys could help me out. Is anterless white tail a normal license this year? It doesn't seem to be linked with any special draw. Just wondering because last year antlerless white tail was all I could find.

Thanks for any help.

Antlerless whitetail is a common tag very year. Up here in northern Ab (528) the season is the last two weeks in November. Some years its been the entire month of November.

I haven't checked the season length this year yet.

Where are you in AB?

Thanks Mumps, I didn't know that. Down in Calgary, but we head down to Mountain 402 north of Coleman and Crowsnest.

Well I guess I will start with my usual antlered tag and if nothing occurs will pick up the anterless in Nov.

It depends on the WMU(Wildlife Managament Unit) - some have combined antlered and antlerless whitetail seasons that the general whitetail tag is good for. You can also get the Whitetail antlerless supplemental that is good for either one or two antlerless white tail deer, again depending on the WMU. Check the regulations on what is open and that will give you the information on what tag to have.

Both of the above tags are not special draws, rather, they are your usual over the counter licences.

Now, that said, there are some WMUs that *do* have a special draw requirement - these will be defined in the special draws booklet as well as the Big Game hunting regulations booklet. If you were planning on hunting in one of these special units, you're out of luck unless there were/are left over tags available.

If you have further questions related to your particular circumstances, call your nearest Alberta Sustainable Resources office and ask to talk to one of the conservation officers. They're a good source of information.

Hope this helps you out.

There's 2 tags with the supplemental again this yr. The second one is only valid in certain zones. In my area, I think the supplemental opened Sept 17 with the general tag for rifle.

ok 4 types of whitetail tags,

draw, allows for a specific type (antlered) in a specific FMU
general, allows you to hunt for whatever is open in whatever FMU (antlered and or antlerless)
suplemental, two tags (antlerless only) first one is valid in about 40 FMU's where they are trying to curb the deer populatin explosion, and the second one is valid in about 15 FMU's where the deer are running rampant.

In the zone I'm hunting both suplemental are valid so with those and a general tag I can shoot 3 whitetails. Mulie are on the draw in that zone. Season opens Nov1 for both antlered and antlerless.

Check the regs for a FMU near you
