Alberta Buffalo

yeah i was gonna say "around Fort mcmurray" is a misnomer. Better pack a big lunch.:D I personally know some people that live up in Chip and even those that know the lay of the land up there have a tuff time hunting the "Fort Chip gorilla" Many die hard hunters have had the romantic inclincation of heading up to Chip to catch a buffalo out of the park and putting a pill into it. It aint a cake walk though.

Bison hunting is probably easier on the northern boundary of the Park. This time of year they tend to wander outside of Parks Canada Agency protection quite a bit. I've come accross at least half a dozen, most of them just feeding along the hiway, in the last week or so. Incidently I've also come accross several wolves in the same time frame. I suppose the freezer could be full, but I'd really rather fill it with a moose this year.

Given the anthrax outbreak this past summer, it's a good bet that those still standing are in pretty good shape.

When I lived in Ft. Mac a friend showed me a picture of their hunt just south of Chip. 5 bison for 2 guys (calves and cows). Took the 5 days to get all the meat out. Outside the Park; no limit; no closed season.

Do you buy a license over the counter? Resident hunters only? I figured bison hunting was still heavily restricted. Learn something new everyday!

There isn't any license required, so I would assume that non residents could hunt them since they don't fall under Alberta's hunting regulations.

We hunted ours near the Caribou Mountains, in the Wentzal Lake area, and yes, it is a tough place to hunt. They aren't easy to get to (except by air, and what's the point of that?) and they are tough to get out once they're down. Most cut lines (and emergency airstrips, but that's another story) are extremely overgrown, so it's axe and chainsaw work to get in, unless the river's frozen over enough and you can go that way. Watch out for traffic on the one road out of there, especially on bingo night in High Level. Oh, and lot's of beautiful, very black wolves. - dan
