I was just curious if anyone has recently dealt with the Alberta CFO on a restricted transfer. It's been a couple of years for me but I was just curious if they have backed down on their ridiculous policy of requiring some kind of club membership yet? (Otherwise I will have to set something up since they have blacklisted/ flagged me in their system for complaining about it) thanks.

I checked before posting and it was not up yet on my phone- regardless I am looking for someone who has recently dealt with the Alberta CFO. Thanks.

As of about 4 yrs ago they introduced the requirement that you MUST have a valid membership in order to acquire restricted firearms. To date, they strictly adhere to this requirement. Many folks use the "associate membership" as a means to remain a member of a range without incurring the high cost initially. You have to do the math though. If you are going to shoot more than 2x/month the full membership becomes viable, but if only shooting minimally each year, the Associate may be a good alternative. I know that they offer the Associate at both The Shooting Edge and Calgary Shooting Center, and also AHEIA has range memberships. Dont think there is any other way around it unless you have photos of the CFO in a compromising position with livestock..

Thanks guys- gunna renew my Aheia membership I guess. I was hoping the upcoming legislative changes were going to bring some sense to the CFO in AB. Apparently they continue to run the show until they are forced otherwise.

If your purpose is for target shooting, then you need a range membership. Never tried going the collector route, but you won't get an ATT if you have self declared as a collector.

I wonder if they would accept IPSC/IDPA/ICORE membership? You could claim you only shoot matches and membership is not required for the range the match is being held at. Might work if you hold a membership in one of the shooting sports. With the pending role back in the CFO's power who knows.

I just did 2 transfers from stores in Edmonton and maybe spent a whole 20 minutes on the phone.
They do still require a range membership but I just have an associate membership with a range in Edmonton and that's all they needed.
I know it's complete BS but if it makes them happy and speeds up the process it only cost $30 so well worth it.

They haven't asked me for proof of membership for a couple of years now, and I've bought probably 4 or 5 restricted firearms since the last time they had me fax in my membership. iMaybe after they have a few years of membership cards on file , they cut you some slack?

every new restricted i buy the store requires it at the time of sale, when i asked why they told me that the paperwork will get kicked back to them if its missing.
kinda sucks, even considering ive had my restricted for 25 years. i guess they are waiting for the one time i forget to renew it to pounce on me!

i know 2 co-workers that let their memberships lapse and both had to scramble to get new ones because they where refused STATT's do to lack of gun club memberships.
