Alberta Fall Hunt

So, if a fellow already has his WIN card, what is a good way to get starting in hunting here in sunny Alberta?

If you're after big game, the information regarding the 2006 hunting draws comes out in a couple of weeks. Depending on what / where you want to hunt, you might need to get your tag through a lottery system. For some tags it takes a lot of years to get drawn, and in Alberta they use a "priority" level system, so your chances of getting some tags the first year or two that you apply are basically zero. Usually the draw application period is June 1 - June 24, so remember to get your applications in before the due date.

Also, the 2006 regulations won't be published until later in the summer, but you can pick up a copy of the 2005 regs from your local Crappy Tire, etc. The regs will tell you which WMUs require special draws, or if you can just use a general tag. It's a place to get started and start to plan for the upcoming hunting season or two.

You can apply for most draws even if you aren't an Alberta resident,as long as you apply with an Alberta resident. This would get you one priority point this year, and shorten your wait.

Don't forget that many species are NOT on a draw basis. Antlered Whitetail is usually a general tag for example. Where I usually hunt, you can buy an Antlered Whitetail tag, and one supplemental Antlerless Whitetail tag with no draws involved. Moose, on the other hand, is almost always a draw.

The general tag is actually just a whitetail tag that can be used on antlered or antlerless deer in most areas.

Thanks for all the info, I'll check it out. Was thinking that whitetail would be a good place to start, and then work up to others (moose). Anybody looking for a "partner" :) ?
