I am looking for a gunsmith that could cut and crown a heavy rimfire barrel for me.
I have a hammer forged Ruger barrel that is 20" and I would like to get it down shorter to make it lighter for my wife to use.

Or is this job going to end up costing me more than the price of a new barrel? Could get into a Green Mountain for $200

A factory semi auto barrel can not be cut shorter than 18.5 inches, a manual action 18 inches... so the weight loss will not be great.

Buy her a lighter firearm.

Not sure what they cost now, but Tactical Solutions has a lightweight 'heavy barrel' that uses a stainless inner barrel and aluminum outer barrel. I have one and love it. Really cuts the weight down.

Buy a shorter barrel. Rimfire barrels on semi-auto's can be bought shorter than 18.5" - but you can only cut it down to 18.5".

Sell the heavy barrel, but a shorter one, and your total outlay will be less than the cost to get it cut and crowned!

Finding a machinist for less than $75 an hour to cut your barrel. Just buy a different barrel. 1 flaw and the accuracy of that barrel is toast. Sell it after getting your new one.

Ron Hendrickson, K&S Arms, EM Precision. There is also Insite in Lloydminister if that helps you. K&S does a nice target crown.

Your talking about a Ruger 10/22 Target barrel? Take that barrel and use it as a garden stake. Even a pretty bad shooter can outshoot those barrels. I don’t know how Ruger can call them “target” models it’s blatant dishonesty.

10/22 barrels swap very easily with no special tools. Just buy a better barrel and install that. You will be much happier with the finished product.

The Kidd Ultralight barrel is very lightweight, .920 profile and shoots excellent. For 330$ I wouldn’t screw around with the Ruger barrel. Magically your wife will become a much better shot.
