Just wondering if there are any bans on hunting in southern Alberta because of the fires. I am heading out to the Taber area and hunting birds in that area and south as far as Milk River the first week of October. Just me and the dog will be on foot. Any information would be appreciated

We just had some cooler weather the last few days and a sprinkle of rain. Much of the crop is off across the south. Might be a good time to start working the phone as you'll find more receptive landowners when it isn't 30 degrees. Still very dry. Some dumb@$$ with a careless smoke tossed out the window would burn Milk River to Moosejaw.

Thanks for the info gentleman. I have my book of names and phone numbers from previous years. Have to say I love the reception I get in Alberta from landowners compared to Ontario. In 10 years of bird hunting Alberta I have only been refused once. People are friendly and it makes for a great travel/ hunting experience. I would have left Ontario a long time ago if it wasn't for family committments

If there is anything nefarious going on in Alberta it is the Mayor of Calgary fighting with the ownership of the Calgary Flames about the location and costs of a New Stadium.
As for the banning of Hunting, no it would be the limiting of access to the forests for a couple of reasons.
The safety of the Fire Crews and to protect idiots from starting more fires and thus endangering themselves and the Crews Working in the woods.
Head over to Alberta Outdoorsman and get some facts there...
Lots will have more details and points to consider.

As I understand it is an access ban to the back-country in certain areas rather than a "hunting" ban. Hopefully the rain happening now hangs around for a few days and the SW part of the province gets a good soaking as I don't think they will lift the access ban until the fire potential lowers significantly. We bow hunt in the foothills west of Claresholm and I think this area is closed now so our trip down there next week might not happen. It is up to Mother Nature now.

I'd wager that it'll be closed until snow, which could happen anytime or November. Wait and see.

You might be right and if this year follows last years weather we could be in trouble because I remember hunting in just a long sleeve shirt in early November down there with not a bit of snow. Hopefully the cold and moisture show up and hang around earlier this year.

No fire bans in the Taber/Milk River area..............there has been some rain recently. You will be at the mercy of the landowners to let you hunt.
