Most of my family resides out in Alberta and so for the last decade I have been going out there to hunt every fall. My Uncle is always my hunter host. I always apply for draws with mine and his WIN #. This year I might not be able to make it and I am at a priority 5 for mulies and 8 for elk. My uncle still wants to apply for mulies and elk but I may just put in 999. If he is successful in drawing will my priorities drop down to 0? He seems to think that our priorities are tied together. We are the same priority on everything and when I am succesful in drawing a mulie tag he is as well. Is that just a coincidence? I think thats why he thinks our priorities are linked. I just want to clarify this because I don't want to drop back down to zero and wait another 5 for a mulie and 8 for an elk

Your priorities to this point were linked because:

•A Non-resident (Canadian) must apply with at least one Resident hunter in the draw for each licence for which he or she is eligible (exception: Non-resident Trophy Sheep Draw).

•The Non-resident (Canadian) must hunt with a Hunter Host if successful in a draw for a special licence.

If he puts your WIN # in with his draw application, and is drawn, you will be too.
If you are certain you will not be able to come out and hunt this year do not put in for draws with him or you will indeed revert to zero if drawn.
(unless he doesn't intend to hunt either this year and puts in 999 for draw choice to simply bump up both your priorities)

OK. But if he doesn't put my WIN # in I will then remain at my priority?

Awesome. So I can still apply the following year with him as my hunter host and I will keep my priority. Thats the way i perceived it and that makes sense.

Yes, but with a caveat though.

When applying for draws with another hunter(s), the priority for the group application is that of the individual member whose priority is the lowest.

So, if he gets drawn this year for mule deer or elk, next year he will be at priority zero.
If you both apply next year together, your group application will be treated as priority zero, regardless of whether you are a 5 or 8 and you probably will not be drawn.

Next year it might be to your advantage to apply for the draws with one of his relatives or friends or whoever that has similar priority numbers as you do.
I’m fairly sure you do not have to apply with him and he can still act as your hunter host.
