Hey guys,
Was just wondering what the rules were on getting hunting licenses.
I know of a guy who went and got a general deer tag without a hunters competency test. Is this allowed, and if you need a hunters comp test, wheres the best place to do it. Also, do you have to repeat the test, or do you just renew it?

I figure it has to do something with checking the bo that youve completed the hunters ompeteny tes on the WIN applcation. anyoneelse heardofthis?

That is site for the Alberta Hunter Ed Instructors Assoc.
As well www.srd.gov.ab.ca and follow the links to the Getting a Hunting License in Alberta info.
If he has held a hunting license in another jurisdiction or has taken a Hunter Ed course in AB or another province or state then he is ok.
If he hasn't done any of these things then he committed an offense by lying on the WIN form.
As of this year (2007) if he has a prohibition in any jurisdiction, then he is also prohibited from hunting in AB.
The above two websites lay it out clearly.

I don't remember anything about a hunter safety course on the WIN card form and from the question and answer I found on the Alberta SRD site I doubt that there is.

A: No. Successfully completing a Conservation and Hunter Education course (or passing a hunter-competency test) is only required of first-time hunters applying for a hunting licence (if such hunters have not passed such a course or test elsewhere, and are not non-residents accompanied by a licensed guide). Anyone who applies and pays $8.00 is issued a WIN.

Even though I took a hunter safety course 29 years ago I have never been asked if I had in the last 6 years of hunting in Alberta and I will bet that they don't ask this year either.

You can lie when you check that box. There is no central registry that lists who does and doesn't have the course. The license sellers are supposed to ask for proof -- most don't. So yeah it can happen easily but those who do it are committing the offense of : "obtain licence when ineligible" - 15 Wildlife Act.

I'm going have to check the current WIN application form. When I renewed mine a couple years or so ago, there was a box. If they have removed that box, I feel it should be added back on.
As you have taken the course, if you are asked then you are being truthful saying yes. A lot of places don't ask and they really should be.
Guys who lie about it are commiting an offence and pizz me off.
I took my course in 1978 and still have my card plus every hunting licence I have held since then just in case I need to actually prove to a retailer or F&W officer that I am in compliance. (It is a pretty big envelope)

I lived in Ontario :redface: when I took my course and all I got was a piece of paper that I turned in to get my first deer license, after that you had to show an old license for proof again. What a screwed up province, been gone 25 years and I'll never live there again.
 
I just got my first Alberta lic. I've been licenced in Ontario for years.
There was a question on the form with a yes and no box that you had to initial in either one or the other.

Have you ever held a licence to hunt in Alberta or anywhere else???

I initalized the yes box....ok....here's your temporary win card number....your permanent win card will come in the mail....just use this number until then....here's your deer tag.....that'll be X dollars...I can't remember exactly how much.....I paid and went on my way.....simple as that.
 
Where a person's honesty matters more than a piece of paper....It's a good place to live. ;)

I took the course in ON, but.....To be honest.... the course is not likely to provide a hunter with everything common sense and a little bit of reading won't. And with the great help of CGN-ers, the matter is so much simpler.

I had the FAC back in 81 and 4 yrs ago when my house burnt and all my guns, I was told that i had to take the test again as the old one was invalid.Haven,t taken the core again or challenged yet but looks like i,ll hafta.

It looks like the course is 31 hours on the www.aheia.com site... Is this necessary? Is there not a horter program, or even a chance to write the test and not take the course?
 
I doubt it. If you're an avid hunter, have taken the course before, or have studied up on the topic suitably, you probably could challenge the course. Contact one of the instructors near you to confirm.

Be aware though, if you blow the challenge course, you'll then DEFINITELY need to take the full meal deal. Common sense & all that.

I don't know if it's true or not, somone told me you can get your WIN card for fishing, then use that for Big Game. No testing or course required.. Like I say, it's hear-say though..
 
Ya, I've been fishing for years, and I've got the WIN, but I want to get into hunting for nxt season, so I'm just trying to figure thing out in advance.

Not true. You would have to "upgrade" your WIN to allow hunting. Again, you can always lie and check the appropriate box but that would be illegal.

Who ever told you that lied to you.
Once you have the CFSC old combined course, or new split course, you have it.
I would apply for the license and check the box that you have taken the course and passed it because you have.

Would that one of the prerequisites for working in a government job was having a brain.
