Having not hunted in over fifteen years, I have decided to take to the field this fall in search of grouse. From what I understand, being that I am a first time hunter in Alberta, I am required to take the Alberta Conservation and Hunter Education course, or pass the Alberta Hunter Competency exam. Can someone suggest a reputable place to take the course or challenge the test in the Calgary region?
Thanks in advance!

Another place is "the shooting edge" , they sponsor this site and are good people to deal with. Check out their banner at the top of this page. :)

If you have hunted any where or have taken any sort of hunter competency test you dont need to take the first time hunters test.
Read here:
Licensing requirements for first-time hunters
A first-time hunter is a hunter who 1) has not previously held a hunting licence in Alberta or elsewhere, or 2) has not passed a hunter competency test in Alberta or elsewhere, or 3) has not successfully completed a hunter education course in Alberta or elsewhere

I'm not sure, but I think you can sign a statutory declaration at F&W stating that you have held a license before. Like Lefty #### mentioned, if you've held a license before you shouldn't have to take the course / test again. I'd call F&W first before taking the course / test.

They also recognize hunters ed from other provinces, regions or organizations. It's pretty non restrictive. You are not required to provide a certificate or documentation on the completion of the course either. Just sign you've done one.

Welcome back to hunting!!!!
When I hear "grouse hunting" I think of cool October days , walking down a cutline with a blue sky above and yellow aspen leaves sailing on the breeze. Tamarak needles are golden and you smell high bush cramberries. Walking along with my double 410 under my arm and a dog out in front of me. Maybe my wife or daugter or son by my side.

I also think about grouse breasts with onions in a cheese sauce.

Good luck this fall.

I'm in a similar boat but getting a different answer, if I'm reading above me correctly.

I talked to (?? lost the number, Alta Fish & Game?). Told them I'd hunted and been licensed 25 years ago in Manitoba. They said 'nope, still have to write the test'. Talked to an instructor, who talked to his master instructor, they won't let me go straight to a test challenge, want me to take the course. Sheesh, I'm a 45 yr old banker, I'm about as conservative and safety minded as you can get.

Sounds like you were talking to "instructors" with the Alberta Hunter Training Instructors Association. They are not the autority on this subject, just instructors for the course.

Go to a licence vendor (most sporting goods stores, many Canadian tire stores and some Red Roosters and 7/11s) and tell them you have held a hunting licence before in Man. They will give you an application form for a WIN number. Fill it out and give it back to them with the fee and they will give you a temporary WIN #. Now you can get fishing or hunting licences and a permanent WIN card will be mailed to you.
