Hi All,

Question on hunting upland birds in provincial grazing reserves in Alberta

The regs say that any animal brought onto the grazing reserves must be under the "direct control" of the owner

When considering bird dogs - what exactly does "direct control" mean in physical terms

Does that mean that we just stay away from the cattle, or does it mean the dog comes when I call him, or does it mean a leash?

The first two I can manage - but no point in going if it means a leash.

Thanks

I don't mean this flippantly, but I read it as "if your dog is seen chasing or otherwise harassing livestock, don't go whining to the press when it gets shot".

I hunt all over Southern AB, including near cattle. My dogs are "under control" because any mischief can be ended immediately with the push of a button, and some judiciously applied electricity. There is no excuse for out of control dogs where livestock is present. Period.

However, since Grazing Reserves in AB usually still require you to obtain permission prior to accessing them, maybe asking the Manager's opinion on the subject would be the best place to start.
