Anyone ever go hunting for spring black bear in Alberta ? ive never hunted bear b4 so this will be my first time but im looking forward to it.

any tips or info you can give me about black bears in the spring ?

on that one all ready, April and May roughly but thanks for the Alberta outdoors website.

will i be completely screwed with out a quad to drag it out ? Are black bears a worth wile size in the spring compared to the fall ? Ill be taking a week in the bush and for sure hope to find the largest one possible. Have any tips for bear hunting? I figure ill just kinda stalk around in the woods quietly. Like i said ive never hunted bear b4 so i dont know, right idea or ?

Not sure I'd waste my time in the woods.....get on the newly emerging vegetation on cutlines, roadsides, pipelines and powerlines. This is the first source of feed for most bears. If you are headed north of Edmonton, I'd wait till the first or second week of May. Bears might be lighter in weight in the spring but a 6' bear is still a 6' bear regardless of time of year. Bears can be heavy, over 300 pounds in some cases so you'll have to skin them out in the field if you are away from the road without a quad and then you can quarter them out just like a deer to pack the meat out. There's some great pipelines and such up in the Fox Creek to Valleyview area.

Spring bear

I agree with sheep on the time, seems the small bears come out early, big ones late May, if you drag a bear you will most likely wreck the hide, bear meat makes good sausage, good luck.

the further north you go, the later they come out. I would also try hunting along rivers, creeks. Stuff tends to turn green there first too.

I'll be going for bear this spring in Northern Sask, but still not sure whether to take the muzzleloader again or to take up bow hunting. Almost everyone I know here who hunts them does it with a bow.
