Guys, There is one thing I have not had any experience in hunting and that is Elk. I got an invite from a fellow and he is going to host me in the Grand Prairie north area for a second week of November. What would be the best way to maybe become successful hunting these animals ? what kind of distances would one be shooting, anything that would help me ? I'm hoping to learn a little here !

Thanks guys

Getting permission may be your biggest challenge if you leave it until you get there. Elk will be on the prime agricultural fields in November. 300 yard plus shots are not uncommon that time of year.

Go to the fins and fur guys and ask them where he problem elk are. They will send you to the farms where they are. Farmers want to get rid of them

Swan Hills, I'm guessing?

No that's closer to Slave Lake. More likely hunting the Saddle Hills between Leglace and Spirit River/Rycroft.

LOTS of hunters from what I here-high pressure but if you get access to private lands, then it will definitely help. Distance of shots can be less than 100m to 300m+.

I know the elk I hunt near farmland, I have taken in late November and into December (Cow Elk), shots have been as close as 10-14m and over 300 but say average 150ish.

HAVE FUN !!

Oh ok. I hunted moose north of Laglace last year. From what others in my group were experiencing, the elk were pretty hard to get at. They tended to move outside of legal light. The successful strategy was to position along cut lines and wait for elk to cross. Split second opportunities for the most part. Shots were taken at 300 yards or more.
The elk showed a stronger presence in the farm lands in December, compared to middle of November when we were there.

I don't have much more experience than you, but I've tried to hunt them on the fields and if it's an area where there is hunting pressure, they don't come out until after legal light and they leave before it starts again. So you would need to find an area between their daytime lounging area and their night time feeding area.
Good luck, elk know what you had for breakfast so when you get one it's pretty great.
