All Around Hunting Rifle - Options?

as long as it's stainless....may as well make it a stainless laminated Mountain Rifle...and a VariX-III 3.5-10X...matte of course....in matte Leupold Dual Dovetails........now THAT'S the end of the story :D
The only thing about the Laminated MRs is that they are a bit heavy, for a Mountain Rifle.

My Laminated MR in .223AI (same bbl contour) with a B&L 3000 4x12AO weighs a bit over 8lbs

I'm going for a smaller scope

SC.............

My choice would be a controlled feed bolt action rifle in .308 or .30-06, it would be between Ruger, Winchester M70 or CZ. Good quality optics will pay for itself, Leupold is my choice. Stay away from magnum calibres. Tikkas and Sakos are fine rifles but if anything goes wrong it's big $'s and long waiting times to get it fixed. For practical purposes I would go for a synthetic stock with blue steel.

Is that because no one in Canada is repairing them or due to something else?

Tikka and Sakos are no different than any other rifle for repair... and they rarely need repair anyway due to outstanding quality... and why would a magnum be different than a non magnum :?:

This is the ticket, in a .270 or .300 WSM, top it off with a Bushnell Elite 3200 with the Firefly Recticle.

Best of the best.

There's no way to go wrong with a bolt action rifle in 30-06. You don't need a variable power scope either. Sure they're nice to have, but a 3.5-10 Leupold will run you about twice what a 4x Leupold will. And for the most part you'll have your 3.5-10 set around 4 or 5x while hunting. Don't cheap out on the scope, but no need to break the bank either. A fixed 4x Leupold or Burris should get you going just fine. I wouldn't feel handicapped with a 4x on a 30-06. In reality the majority of your shots will likely be 200 yards and under, and even at 300 yards for a shot on a deer, caribou etc, you don't need more power than that.

I prefer blued steel over stianless but that's just me. The preference is slight. A Remington, Winchester, Browning, Sako etc bolt action 30-06 is the way to go if you want maximum versatility.

Savage. As good as anything else, and the do it yourselfer can easily change calibers if for any reason he's not happy with the '06. (stranger things do happen)

I was in search of something similar. After much research, I settled on a Remington 700 BDL in 7mm Remington Magnum. I topped it with a Bushnell 4200 2.5x10 scope. I couldn't be happier. I think this combination was a decent compromise between cost and performance, and the caliber is suitable for any hunting I will be doing (caribou, moose, wolf, black bear.)

If I had to do it again, I would probably look at dropping a bit more cash on a Sako. But I am happy with the Remingon 700 BDL.

Good luck!
