I just got my PAL in the mail in at the beginning of February, and I am itching to go hunting with it.

I live in the Kitchener-Waterloo area, so hunting here is limited, but I have an uncle with some farm property in the Grey County, Markdale-Traverston area, that is crawling with deer and turkey, and grouse (or pheasant, I'm not sure) and coyotes a plenty.

I've been trolling the intertubes for info, turns out it's not super easy to find. I think my WMU is 87c, and my uncle's is 82A or 82B.

As far as I can tell, Spring turkey season starts at the end of April, and every other animal I might be able to hunt in the area is in the fall.

I'd like to if possible hunt for turkey this Spring, but I haven't gotten my hunting license or done the class yet.

My question is: how long after I take the course does it take for me to get the license? Is it like my PAL, where it took 3 months from doing the test until I had the piece of plastic with my picture in my hand?

Also, if anyone is in either my area or my uncle's, what else is good to hunt for in the area?

I'm sure more questions will come in as information does.

Pass your course, go pay for your tags and you are good to go. But you may be to late for a course now. I imagine they are booked by now.

I took the hunting course Sunday in Burlington and I was told that I could get my hunting license Monday morning if I needed to.

Keep in mind you need a separate turkey license, which is a one day course, on top of the one day hunting course. I believe that there is a Turkey class around April 16 in Hamilton, but I don't have contact info. The instructor mentioned something about it yesterday.

BTW, I'm obviously new to this, so this info is second hand, not experience based.

Best of luck to you. I've got family between Markdale and Flesherton and have seen plenty of turkey in the area.

You can get the tags at service ontario kiosks, check online if they support MNR stuff. Also you can get them online as well. You need an outdoors card also. Also some places like Walmart or Canadian Tire sell small games licences and the other tags that you will need.

yup as soon as you pass your hunting course you can take your temp paper and get all tags that are in season at the kiosk except for turkey. You will need to take the one day turkey course which I am taking April 17th and then you can get your turkey tag. Check the website I listed for you and sign up if there is availability, spots fill up quick. You have your PAL so you are good to go with firearms but I had to wait for my PAL so I ended up buying an Excalibur Equinox and used that for the remainder of the 2010 deer season until my PAL came in. Good luck and happy hunting this year!!

Note that you need both your hunter ed and your turkey course. And at least at the time you just took your proof of passing to the Service Ontario and that was that, you could hunt (same goes for proof of passing turkey course).

I did my hunting course at Shooter's Choice. The instructor was really great. I think his name was Rob Roe. If he is teaching the course soon I'd say go for it for sure.

in NS they give you a temporary card when you pass your hunter saftey so you can walk right out and get the proper permits, but like was already mentioned the course/courses might all be full now.

A PAL has nothing to do with hunting. After the Hunter's Safety course, you'll have to pay the Outdoors Card tax, then you can buy a hunting licence for whatever is in season. Read the hunting regs.

A PAL does have plenty to do with hunting if I want to use a firearm for hunting.

Thanks for all the answers everyone. I found the hunter's safety course available nearby mid April. I'll take it and see if I can squeeze in the turkey course as well. I had no idea there was a separate turkey course as well.

Don't wait to sign up for that open course near you. They usually fill up faily quick.
The Turkey course if quite basic. More of a cash grab than anything but you will get a bit of good information out of it.

Thanks for the link IH8. I'll be signing up for the course on the 16th.

Saw a huge Gobbler today on my way in to school, right along side the highway. Thought it was an inflated garbage bag stuck in the bushes till I got a closer look and saw the strut.

Cheers,
