A buddy from work just got himself a Rem. 700 SPS in 7mmMag.
He would like to know what an ideal bullet wt. would be for the prairies.
I suggested a 140gr bullet as most animals to be taken will be deer.
Whats your advice?

Thanks in advance

I have built or purchased at least a dozen 7 Rem Mags over the last 30 years, and have killed nearly every north american species of game with the 7 Rem. My experiences are 160 grain bullet for all. They seem , in most rifles to have the best accuracy. Also most 160 gr bullet have thicker jackets than the 140s, so tend to do less damage to meat and are less likely to come apart. Also the heavier bullets retain more speed and kinetic energy at longer distance .
The 140s will have a slightly flatter trajectory out to 300 or 400 yards but the 160s will eclipse the lighter bullets beyond that in most cases.

I load for quite a few fellas that shoot the 7MMag, and the majority ask for 160 grain.
When asked what I would use, I always say "160 grains will do for everything".....

I would have to agree with you Ardent,It looks like the majority of CGN's who posted a reply opt for the 160gr,I will pass on this information to the owner,
Thanks y'all;)

Another vote for 160 gr Partitions.

The whole purpose of the magnum is to drive the heavier bullets faster than the standards will. 160 is the best weight for most hunting.

While smaller capacity 7mm's are well suited to 140/150 grain bullets, the 7mm Mags really shine with 160's, And I've used the Partition half of forever, with great success. Regards, Eagleye.

On a similar topic, I have a buddy that is well known for fantastic shooting until this season, he shoots a Rem7mm and has always used 160's. For some reason he had a box of 140's this year that he ended up blowing off at the range and couldn't get a group that was similar, they were flying all over the place, real strange. One shot would be 6" left and low, next would be 2" high and right, third shot somewhere else. He figures they were just too light and flew all over, I offered no explanation as I couldn't understand it, I do know that once he went back to the 160's he was dead on 3" high at 100, clover leafs, every time.

I use 140gr A-frames for elk and deer...if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I have not shot any 160 grainers out of my 7STW...maybe I should, a handfull of gunnutz can't be wrong.
