All-round choice for backpacking/hunting/predator defense

Great advice all!

I agree re: mag capacity. I'm no Miculek so the magazine capacity concept is moot at least for this and hunting use. I would feel fortunate to get 2 shots off.

I'm seeing a lot of 870 Express's go for $650+ and while I would like the Magpul furniture, I'm not impressed with the consensus on the gun overall. I have a Wingmaster and it's fantastic, but I don't trust what's happened with Remington in the last ~15y. Never liked the Mossberg 500s but the 590 @supernova is sporting up top is attractive. May consider.

I handled a few today. 870 Express felt familiar (but I won't be fooled, ain't no Wingmaster), Winchester SXP felt quite good, and Supernova felt great. Wasn't very impressed with the non-tactical Nova. Fore-end rattled, and the pump release felt annoyingly cheap (I had to push it beyond flush with the trigger guard to get it to engage). Not bad considering the price but I'm not super convinced, although maybe the Tactical is better?

What's the consensus on the Blue Line 870 copy? I heard they're using milled parts and it's more similar to original Wingmasters, but I tend not to trust much of what I hear in gun shops.

You already have a Wingmaster? Just use that, save yourself some money. If you want buy a shorter barrel, even if it’s just a 2 3/4” receiver your fine if you get some good slugs. Nothing wrong with a classic like that, one that you’re already familiar with and is known to be reliable is a bonus.
