This is weird.... I just got a win 94 from the father in law, and all of a sudden there are all these posts about winchester levers popping up.

...or have they always been there and I just had my head up my butt?

there's about five trillion of them in circulation...only a matter of time until people talk about them :D

I got one but never talk about it 8)

just like the pontiac 6000, you'll never notice how many there are on the road until you drive one.

Oh Jeeze, they're better that that I hope

i wasn't implying the 94 was bad, just that there are LOTS of them out there.

they're like Lee Enfields, loads of em out there, robust and reliable and really all you need most of the time.

Also, like the Lee Enfield, they are one of the cheapest guns out there, specially if you don't mind a bit of ugly.

Can you get one of those in 260?

A .30-30 case necked down to .264 cal would probably be quite a shooter although performance might be hampered with flat nosed bullets needed to safely feed from a tube mag. But single shot with spitzer bullets a 6.5-30 would probably be quite a 'performer' in reality. :)

Very interesting...:D

2600 fps would probably be doable out of a 6.5-30 Win with a 120 gr. (7-30 Waters gets 2700 fps with a 120). 140 gr. bullets could do 2400 fps.

so if you had a single shot that could use spitzers, downrange numbers would look like this :

120 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip @ 2600 fps
+/- 3" Point Blank Range of 260 yards (220 yard zero)
100 yards ~ 2420 fps, 1560 ft-lbs, +2.8"
150 yards ~ 2330 fps, 1450 ft-lbs, +2.8"
200 yards ~ 2245 fps, 1345 ft-lbs, +1.1"
250 yards ~ 2165 fps, 1245 ft-lbs, -2.2"
300 yards ~ 2080 fps, 1155 ft-lbs, -7.4"

140 gr. Sierra GameKing BTSP @ 2400 fps
+/- 3" Point Blank Range of 243 yards (206 yard zero)
100 yards ~ 2240 fps, 1560 ft-lbs, +2.9"
150 yards ~ 2160 fps, 1450 ft-lbs, +2.6"
200 yards ~ 2085 fps, 1350 ft-lbs, +0.4"
250 yards ~ 2010 fps, 1255 ft-lbs, -3.8"
300 yards ~ 1935 fps, 1165 ft-lbs, -10.2"

Not bad at all, recoil in a 7 lb rifle would be 10-11 ft-lbs

You could use an old 340 Savage for the platform for a project like that. They are dirt cheap when chambered in 30-30, they have a detachable box mag so spitzers aren't a problem and they are easy to re-barrel.

May the almighty hand of God smight you!!! BLASPHOHEMY!!!!!!!!

Specially when theys dressed up in all that fancy gold bling

Alright, I agree on this..... Anyone that buys a Gold coloured gun usually shows up to hunt camp in a pimped-out Escalade with 20" Tires and Gold spinners and wears Baggy Jeans, Bandana, sideways baseball cap and Mr. "T" Gold chains.... and of course Nike Hi-Tops......  8)

A Rifle or Carbine That Is Always "Just There" Eh!

IF I had a dollar for every time I have started a conversation someplace with another shooter-fellow hunter-relative-gun show seller was shooting-holding or displaying a M-94 we could all go for steak dinner. It is "amazing" that it has been in production for so long and used in some many roles, some of the most surprising being a military one likes it common use in the 1915 Mexican Revolution or with the BC Coastal Rangers in WWII. As an all round carry gun it really has no equal. How many millions of them? Add to that the pre 1964 ones were virtually hand assembled custom rifles at the Winchester plant of that time. With a Lyman receiver sight and fired slowly it is quite capable of grouping well. Its greatest achievement is its longevity and what story that really tells.
Treasure the well worn M-94 that your Father or Uncle or Neighbour passes along to you. With proper care they will last until 2094 when one of your descendants can say, "This was Grandad's Gun".
I have a seen a lot very well used and abused M-94 but I have never seen one that wouldnt function.
The MAIN thing is to NEVER single round load it from the breech but from only the magazine. You' ll break the ejector by single loading from the breech and this is the most common broken part on a M-94.

IMO, single loading causes no problems at all in the '94. I've done it thousands of times. (Every time I load up for over thirty years.)
When single loading the extractor snaps over the back of the case in exactly the same manner it does when fed from the tube.
I believe broken extractors are caused by not cleaning out the cut in the back of the barrel where the extractor fits when the action is closed. It's not a common failure either.
I've seen worn cartridge stops, and one broken firing pin over the years, but never a broken extractor. There are no failures on a '94 that could be described as common.

Dang, I like todbartell's avatars! :p
