I am starting to do some research on 12g pumps for waterfowl. It's about time I stop going over to the old mans and taking his 870 wingmaster (his pride and joy) and get my own rig. I love his gun but am interested if there is a more weather resistant configuration out there. I hunt marine areas often and go on extended multi week trips up the north coast when proper care is difficult and would like to take the gun with me. What are the most weather resistant finishes out there? What models do you suggest?

I am aware of the remington marine gun but don't like how shiny it is(must flare ducks like crazy on sunny days) or how short the barrel is. I am seeking opinions on the available pump guns in general and if there are any that might suite the above needs. It surprises the hell out of me that there aren't more stainless configurations of waterfowl shotguns out there considering they spnd most of their time in marsh.

I like the action on the 870 remington (although I don't like the push button safety just can't get used to it) but have little experience with other pumps so I don't really have a good point of reference.

You could always paint over the finish no?

The barrel is only 18 inches from the factory I would be looking for something in the 26 inch range for waterfowl. I don't know enough about the other finishes they are using on the rest of their guns in terms of weather resistance (cammo paint etc).

Ithaca Model 37? (pump action)
Browning BPS? (pump action)

Both feature bottom loading and ejection which adds a bit to the weather resistance. A used Ithaca can be had for under $350 while a new BPS costs around $600

coming soon. :D Takes care of that "shiney problem."

I'd look at a Model 835 Mossberg. The finish on these guns are quite durable, and they seem to be pretty much trouble free from what I've seen of them around here. They are also pretty reasonably priced compared to The high end 870's or some of the European models.

If the only concern you have about your current gun is the finish, I would recommend Dura Coat or Gun-Kote.
