I have started this thread because there were questions asked about a certain type of action in one of my SxS guns.
Soooo, for those not informed and who would like to learn, here are just a few- there are many more however !:p
Here are four guns , (all black powder cartridge), all hammer doubles, but with distinctly different actions.

The top one is a pretty common bar action lock, with the springs towards the front of the lock, and a round body underneath the barrels.
The the action body for the hinges and barrel etc are exposed.
The second from the top , although a bar action with the springs the same as above , is called a bar in wood, because the action body is enclosed in the stock.
Note the picture below to get a better idea.

The third down is again a bar action lock but the lever is a Jones style under lever opening , the opening lever is not a top latch like the two above, but is under the trigger guard.

And the one below that is what is termed a BACK ACTION lock, because the action side plate and springs extend behind the hammers.
This also has what is called a Lafeachuax action and is seen on many back action guns in particular.
You can clearly see the iron forend bit in the below photo, and the differences between the two underlevers.

hopefully more members will post in pics of any particular action types they have on their guns!:)

Great thread, cat. What makes are the 2nd and 3rd from the top? The later reminds me of a Manton from long ago. BTW, any chokes on those guns or are all just CYL?

The 12 on top is CYL/CYL, barrels were cut to 26" at some time during its life but it hasn't hurt the regulation one bit!
The Big 10 has some choke on the left barrel, can't remember just how much however.
The Lancaster 12 with the ones underlever is open choked but shoots pretty high which makes me think it's a live pigeon gun
The little 16 IIRC is CYL/CYL

A fine group of shotguns you have there, Cat. I am particularly impressed with the bar in wood specimen for the skill of the craftsman who made the parts look like they grew together. I don't imagine there are too many around these days who could accomplish the same.
Thanks for your post.

ph, they are still around but the cost to get a gun like that built these days ?
Well, I know I couldn't afford it!!:p

Considering that the best stockers in the US are now charging $5000 USD and up to do a sidelock, I'd hate to think of what they would charge for a bar in wood!

Thanks Cat, Always great to look at nice doubles.
Which one is narrowest across the bottom of the receiver?
Do you favour a certain action type yourself?

Cat this is a great thread you started with real potential as a repository of good information for people trying to learn about this stuff. As VictoryXC suggested, when time permits a few more pics of each action from different angles would be good. As well, any of us with other action types (and perhaps forends, ejectors styles etc.) should be throwing up some photos and explanatory notes. Brian, I'm talking to you. LOL

I'm at the range doing RSO duties at the moment but have taken several pics of my modern hammer double with rebounding hammers and manual safety as well as my Ugartechea sidelock which features the hand detachable lock system
they both have different fore ends and fore end latches as well so I will get those up when I get home

The little 16 is the narrowest across the bottom for sure.
I never really though about it, but for an upland gun I like a hammer double with a top latch the best.
They seem to be easier to carry open, which is my preferred method when hunting over dogs.
