My neighbour has recently started shooting a BP muzzle-loader. In the last few days he has developed a skin rash, starting with his hands and now spreading all over. The doctors have no idea of the cause and are treating the rash. The only change in his routine is the BP rifle, so the question is " could this be a reaction to the black powder? " Has anyone heard of this? Thanks.

Near anything can cause a skin rash ... stress. But yes, more suspicious if the rash started on skin that was exposed during shooting.
Have him tell his doctor what is in it so they can test & call the manufacturer if they have any insight. They may have safety precautions for their employees handling the powder itself or ingredients.
(Though my strong suspicion is that if it were BP - he would be having much bigger problems breathing after inhaling the smoke!)

I know when I'm shooting muzzle-loaders I rarely touch any powder but usually end up with hands, etc., covered by "lube". I only use beeswax-based lube and haven't heard of anyone having an allergy to that but perhaps some of the modern concoctions might have irritants?

BP contains sulphur, carbon and potassium nitrate and I have never heard of anyone having a reaction to it or its combustion products, What is he using for cleaning agents beyond hot water, maybe some dish soap and light oil?

It might be the spent black powder that he is reacting to. That stuff is caustic. Just look at a uncleaned barrel or uncleaned brass after a few days.

Some persons are allergic to sulpher including that contained in meds. Hives is the most common, shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, wheezing to name a few.
