Alloy Frames

I know that a lot of firearms have some form of alloy frames on them, and that it cannot be blued. What is the process involved with the blueing colour or blackening of alluminum or alloy. Or is it done with some sort of paint or chemical. Can this process be done at home?

Its a form of anodizing, I'm not sure if color anodizing can be done at home, the black matte finish that an AR 15 has can be done though....
