Almost real f-class guns

my delima Dr. Laura is the following screw - ups when selecting and building my first F-class guns, got the urge about 3 years ago but long-range is so long-range, I cannot see the targets out that far, and walking to set the targets could actually get me in shape, ugg.

I shoot short range BR (please do not hold that against me as I ma not that good a shot but like the FANCY GUNS AND FANCY LOADING STUFF) so that is what I have done the last few years, much to my dismay in broadening my horizons,

GUN ONE

so because I see the smiling Paul Rebin at the calgary gun show hawking his wares or the wares of others less fortunate to keep shooting, I got the urge, so I bought a RPA quadlite, sith barrel, rebin stock for a .223 f-class build as we thought it would be done in 3 weeks, Paul realized he did not have the .223 boltface in stock so we waited until he had inventory, nice walnut stock and it is almost done and I wil get it in 2 weeks or so,

BUT IT HAS A 1 IN 8 barrel for the 80 grian and not the 90 grain .223 so I may only get out to 500 yards for Kamloops (sorry Kamloops folks I may return) and our home range is only 300 meters so I will be OK

or will I

GUN TWO

say a remington XR-100 in .223 with 1 in 8 or so barrel done by bentley gunsmith with by pod so I can use this at Kamloops or at home but once again the barrel may not reach out to 1000 yards, no gib deal or is it. Got the gun last month thinking I might just plink and not get to excited about this sport, if you can call it a sport, people smiling all the time, enjoying themselves, talking with others who share their enthusiasim, god forbid we should all be this lucky.

GUN THREE

a friend (or so I am led to believe) and I thought to share in a gun, was going to get a stiller (from sean ? ) but illness made me re-think. He is getting a BORDEN in a MACMILLAN A-5 so with me owning a NIGHTFORCE I get to shoot it and could buy him out as he just wants to play a bit, what caliber oh it is a 6BR or 6 dasher or 6 XC as it is unchambered yet, so maybe 1000 yards but wait, the home range is only 300 and 500 seems a long way,

GUN FOUR

I have a credit at BAT and thinking of a B in 7 1/2 round with 1.35 diameter so I can build a .223 for FTR in a shehane stock, mmmmmmmm can you say african obeche, and use a henry or rather Mr. REMPLE bi-pod, neat but maybe not that practical but will reach out to 1000 yards and be the first of a few REAL F-CALLS GUNS THAT COMPETE PROPERLY, the problem is it is just a gleam in my eye right now, and may not be ready for summer,

GUN FOUR OK MAYBE

Have a lead on a USA BAT but in a 22 pound gun, mmmmmmm 6 BR and nice stuff, get pictures next week I hope, it looks to be ready now, and I could get it up here before summer but really wanted a 17 pound gun for FTR, and have a lead on another but not sure if my sold barnard action needs a good stock for FTR with the other hopefuls out there in my flock,

BUT WAIT 300 YARD HOME RANGE OR KAMLOOPS AT 500 WHAT AM I THINKING

that darn Keith S has some sort of match in sask-a-bush this summer THAT I WANT TO GO TO

BUT

700 800 900 and my gun of choice I sight in at 300 and then what, that is a lot of money with no coach, no great gun, and no experience,

SO WHAT DO I DO (yes I know pics hsortly when the RPA gets here, and send them to Keith to post for me)

SO THE QUESTION IS, 1. BUILD THE NEW BAT AND TO HECK WITH MY FAILING HEATH, 2. JUST USE ON OF THE ALMOST GUNS AND HAVE FUN 3. BORROW A GUN FOR SASK THAT WILL WORK (yea like I have friends to do that and are that silly to even think of it, sorry steve Kamloops was a dream come true),

or what

please feel free to let the crowd know what you are building or wish to compete with to help those thinking of building a gun this year,

and BARNARDS will be available this spring I am told

The answer is simple, switch the shooting club and become member of Heffly Creek Shooting Club. You can shoot 500m to your hart desire here and even 875m or so if you are willing to hike up the hill.

Grab your 223's, load up some 80's and have at it. At 500m, you will be competitive no problem at all.

The 6BR is a wonderful chambering and there are several who kick everyones butt with it BUT it is no where near as forgiving if you want to shoot out to 1000yds.

Yes, skill trumps ballistics everytime but less ballistics and little experience makes for a long match. Unless, having fun is the main goal.

The 223 and F TR gives you a reasonable level playing field. Ideally, you want to launch the 90's but there are enough shooters doing well with 80's that it is not the end of the world.

No matter what, pick a rifle, tune it up and get shooting.

Jerry, what do you you mean by "no where near as forgiving at 1000 yards"
for the 6BR vs the .223?:)
Do you think the .223 performs better than 6BR at 1000 yards with either the
80g or 90g bullets? or is it because you are in FTR vs F-Open?:D

HAHA me to I'll put my 6br against a 223 @ 1000 :p .

Jefferson If you plan on building an f-restricted I think the 223 is a great cartrige ,however nothing wrong with the 308 too.

If you decide to go the f-open route build 2 a 6br and choose a nice 7mm for way out ,that is what I did anyway.
Actualy I also built a 6slr and will see how that works out in the spring.

6BR is an open cartridge and is no where near as forgiving as other open options.

I am not comparing 223 vs 6BR. Two different classes with their own needs.

I don't shoot competition but have a few precision builds. The 6x47 lapua is very easy to shoot but is not as forgiving in poor conditions( in my very limited experience with it) as my 7mm saum. If I ever do shoot competitively I plan to use the 6x47 for the closer ranges and the 7mm saum for the longer ones( unless there is no wind in which case I would just stick with the 6x47 as it is just so easy to shoot)....
