I've done a little bit more shooting since my first post. I have decided what to buy. The only thing left is to receive permission from my mother. (my dad left me this undaunted task. I'm pretty sure when I do get her permission, he's gonna go get his PAL, but he's leaving that job to me)

Long story short I have her pretty well convinced but her final concern is something I can't seem to find in the books.

If/when the police come over to check my firearms. What do they do and what rights do they have? I mean, can they just show up unannounced and go "Surprise, we're gonna inspect if you store your stuff correctly." and when they check do they go directly to where I place my guns (ie basement) or will they have the right to search the entire house to see if I am leaving my guns lying around (which I won't). Also if they DO show up unannounced and at the moment I am not home and the only one with a PAL will they make my mom take them to where I store my guns (which I will definitely not allow her or anyone who does not have a PAL to access).

Finally this one is just some suggestions and those guys at the gun shop seem to never try to sell. I'm looking for a gun safe, non of the stack-on crap which I found I could open with a screw driver. But any safe I look up is way over priced. Off hand from what I've tried and what I will get I know will get 2 handguns, HK P2000 or P30 (.40) and Beretta PX4 (9mm), and eventually 1 or 2 rifles I was wondering if there is a gun safe someone can recommend that is a little more economical for the little amount of guns I will own. Also can I actually use something like a sentry safe, the ones for offices?

Basically the police can't just show up and demand to see your storage. It's written black on white in the law that they have to get an appointment with you 'within reasonable time' and that only a firearms inspector can do it, and must only look at where it can reasonably believed that there are firearms.

Of course there are variables, but all in all surprise inspections don't exist. More knowledgeable people will surely chime in, especially in regards to restricteds.

On the topic of safes, keep in mind that safes are not cheap. And if it says 'safe' on the box when you buy it, it's a safe. More importantly, you must know about the rule for deciding what size of safe to buy. I have read it here and find it 100% true.

1. Consider the largest amount of guns you can imagine owning.
2. Multiply by 2 and buy that size of safe.
3. Don't be surprised when you need another safe.

Good luck with the old lady!

edit: this is a good read, from the CSSA

You get what you pay for with safes as with anything else.... but not everyone can afford a $2000 safe to start off so....

Cabela's (Winnipeg)has this for $429. They have a 14 gun version for another $90 (a wise investment) I have a 23 gun Liberty safe (565lbs empty), and find it quite crowded with only 15 or so in there. You will not get into these ones with a screwdriver or even a pry bar. Sledge hammer? Sure, but it will take some serious and time consuming work. These safes offer zero protection from smoke or fire. A fire rated safe starts at $729

I think I may get this one...

Don't worry about surprise inspections. First, there are no surprises. They have to arrange a convienient time for the owner. They can;t just show up. And you already have a grasp of what's required...

quote......"Also if they DO show up unannounced and at the moment I am not home and the only one with a PAL will they make my mom take them to where I store my guns (which I will definitely not allow her or anyone who does not have a PAL to access)".......

If she's that concerned all she has to do is politely tell them is you are not home and she doesn't have access to them.
If that's the CSSA article I'm thinking about it explains everything.
Who's worried about this? You or your Mother?
I don't know anyone who's had their firearms inspected, but that's not to say it doesn't happen. Don't worry about it.
