In our WMU(58),and the surrounding WMUs there seems to have been a higher than usual number of dry does around.I thought it might just be our immediate area, but after talking to a number of hunters I found this was pretty common this season.
I think that this was due to our heavy snow fall last winter being hard on the herd.I am not sure but have heard that does naturally abort their fawns if the winter gets too tough.
Either way whatever the cause of the higher than normal dry does it might take a few years for things to bounce back, but only if we have better winter conditions. If this was common throughout the area it will be interesting to see what the MNR will do to insure deer numbers come back to where they were.Or if they do anything at all.

I think its gonna be slim pickings for the Antlerless draw next year and it should be. Id rather slow down for a few years anyway then keep hammering the heard. I dont' have the best observation here since I only hunted 59 for 3 days. I didnt' take note if the does taken in our camp were dry but I can tell you there was not half as much activity in the first week when comparing to last year. The land owner figures they lost 50-70% of their numbers last winter.

we didnt take ANY does this year....and all 9 of us had doe tags.... couple guys passed on does on the first and 2nd day... NOONE all week saw any does with fawns.... No fawns at all actually .. which is ODD .. for our area .. 57

Now looking back I don't recall nearly as many deer on the fields mornings/evenings before the hunt.Might be a few rough seasons to come.

1/2 the does in our area had no fawns. I blame the huge numbers of wolves running around this year. We were infested so bad the beagles wouldn't leave the dog man at times. On one chase they howled so loud, so close, a couple of watchs watched the wrong way with gun half raised & fingers on the safety.

Gut piles were always gone the next morning!

At least there were no bears this year

I believe the winter kill was higher than expected. Having said that, those who did some supplemental feeding, had the usual numbers.

Coyotes seem to be very high and no doubt aren't helping. Kill everyone you see!!!

I have seen tons of Does in 68a during bow season. I saw as many as 6-8 in the field at one time. But I have only seen 2 bucks and 5 total on my trail cam. I also found 3 skeletons from Bucks on our property during the spring which has never happened before.

The Doe I shot had milk

This was the first year I saw a pack of yotes I have seen 1 or two running through the field while hunting but this year I saw a pack of 6 big yotes they responded to my rattling and grunting they came running right towards me. They got with in 17yds but I only had one broad head left from missing a deer and didnt want to waste it. They didnt even know I was there they jumped around in the tall grass for a while then went back in the woods.
