In our WMU(58),and the surrounding WMUs there seems to have been a higher than usual number of dry does around.I thought it might just be our immediate area, but after talking to a number of hunters I found this was pretty common this season.
I think that this was due to our heavy snow fall last winter being hard on the herd.I am not sure but have heard that does naturally abort their fawns if the winter gets too tough.
Either way whatever the cause of the higher than normal dry does it might take a few years for things to bounce back, but only if we have better winter conditions. If this was common throughout the area it will be interesting to see what the MNR will do to insure deer numbers come back to where they were.Or if they do anything at all.
