Alternate Caliber Lever guns

Crazy.Kayaker, no one has answered your question about Mossberg!
I know nothing about that Mossberg rifle, but the company has been making rifles for a long time. In the 1950s, the hay-day of shooting, there were litterly tons of Mossberg 22 rifles shooting sporting rifle 22 competition. They were low priced, non-prestegous, not fancy, maybe even the cheaper models were a bit crude. But they were extremely reliable and actually, darn good shooters. They seemed to have the right quality steel in the right places. The aperature sights they came with were not of the quality of Lyman or Redfield. They were mostly OK, but harder to get adjusted.
I wouldn't hesitate to by a gun that Mossberg made.
 
Getting back to the original posters desire to have a 30-30 as a longer range companion to the 44 Rem Mag, The 30-30 is greatly underrated. With the correct bullets and a 150 yard zero it's not a bad 200 yard round without the great looping trajectory of the 44. The penetration of the 170 grain bullets is in the same range as the penetration of my 358 Norma with 250 grainers. Not as big a hole in stuff of course but adequate with good shot placement.
 
Boo I know Browning chambers all the best rounds the problem for me is I CAN'T AFFORD to get a gun that costs that much not if I want to shoot it anyways. I've stated they cost to much a few times already though I never did mention my budget and I really don't like the looks of them they really look BULKY with that receiver built in the middle of the stock.

I'm looking for a decent gun around $600 might be able to afford $700 as my budget easily allows for $600. I can't afford more then that unless I don't want to shoot the gun for the following 2-3 months after I purchase the gun.

I had discounted the 35 Rem as I thought it was a Pistol round but looking at it I see that it actually is a rifle round. Which round would you say is a better round 30-30 or the 35 Rem. They both come in LEVERevolution as does the .308. which is what I would use for most my serious hunting though I plan on hand loading too which would also include hunting...I wonder if I could rubberize the tips of bullets I make so they don't cook off in the magazine in the recoil, couldn't be that hard.

As for the Whinnie M88 and the Savage 99 I like them and willing to get one but I'm about a good decade plus late for finding them easily in a caliber I like. There are many levers I like just it's all used guns that might or might not come available at a value I can afford in a round I like before I'm ready to buy the gun. I've seen the 99 in the EE not really looking for a .300 savage and I'm still awaiting my PAL and I will not have the money for the next 2-3 months as I already purchased a .22 which ate up half my savings and I want to shoot it so saving up for a few more months before I get the hunting gun so I have the money to shoot them when I get them but I'm always checking out the EE for a good deal so if one does come up I just might try and snatch it up but I'm not holding my breath.

Once you get your PAL put a want to buy add in the EE.You'll be surprized at the number of responces you get.A lot of guys have guns they're willing to sell but don't really need to so they don't bother listing them.Just a thought before you spend the cash you've been saving.For $600 you would be able to find a nice good condition 99,a tried and proven rifle.

I can't offer an opinion on the mossburgs as I haven't tried one but I have 4 99's.

First off you need one (Winnie, Marlin, Savage) in 30-30 because it's just the right thing to do. Then you need a Marlin in 45-70 just for fun. And then when you want something to reach out, pick up a Savage 99 in 308 and scope it.

Bolts? We don't need no stinkin' bolts!
 
I've been pretty much looking at marlin as my primary choice of firearm as they are easiest to come by here in Kamloops and are well within my budget. Just looking at other companies so I know what's the best fit, price, availability and all round hunting gun that I can get before I spend my money I know I was being a stubborn DUTCH/GERMAN (I didn't have much hope of not being stubborn with that kind of heritage) when I was only willing to consider getting a .44 Mag. Still want one but I want a medium range hunting gun too.

No ones answered my question about extending a tubular magazine on a rifle. Is it possible?

I also know the 30-30 is an under appreciated cartridge as its a tried and true round that has lasted about a century 190somthing and still going strong as you can still get guns in that caliber.

We have one dedicated gun store Powder Keg and a Wholesale Sports Outfitters and two Crappy Tires and a Wal-Mart here so if I get a .308 marlin I'll stock up on ammo and brass as I plan on hand loading PDQ, makes shooting MUCH CHEAPER and take lots of ammo with me when ever I go out. As for putting out a WTB on the EE for a 99 and a M88 along with a few other guns and I'll put it out the day I learn I have my PAL coming in the mail and cross my fingers I can find one. I'm just trying to narrow down what to get cause I have only time on my hands as I'm not out shooting my guns ;) just my mouth.

Thanks to everyone so far that has helped me and keep the help/advice coming as the more I learn I can then truly decide what to get and the more I'll be able to help others down the road as you are me.

Were I to buy the Mossberg 464 do you think it would be a good gun based on the quality of their shotguns and present rifles. I know a few people have said they own(ed) a Mossberg shotgun and that they are PLAIN in all regards, but work well though not the best fit. Anyone else agree with that? From what I've seen I agree with the PLAIN part. I only wonder if that tang safety is Metal or plastic. Anyone know? Just waiting till I find one to hold before I purchase one to make sure it fits as they are hard to locate at present.

NB_GSXR I'm willing to get either a box or a Tubular magazine lever Probably will get at least one of each style in different caliber as they each have their own advantage.

I'll be back with more later but its time I go and eat as I'm gonna for a walk shortly to go hunting for some Fair Slippers in the park and check out the chocolate lilies they were still blooming strong last week. Doing my PT now so when I start hunting I'm not wheezing and scare away the game. Da*n lungs are resisting my attempts to strengthen them to my pre-medical leave days.

Extending the tube magazine on a rifle is as simple as getting a longer tube and spring and installing them. Well, almost.
The tube is held in place by pins, screws, or plates, that have cuts or holes in the bottom of the barrel to keep the tube from sliding forward under recoil.
They are held to the barrel by bands that are dovetailed into the barrel.
So, in answer to your question, yes, it can be done. It might be fairly easy, and might be a bit challenging, depending on what's already there, and what you want to do. But it can be done.

By the way, the Magazine tubes are non standard sizes, and pretty much have to be ordered from the manufacturer, or someone like Brownells, or custom fabricated.
 
CrazyKayaker, there is an extremely knowledgable person on guns in general, and lever guns in particular. He is retired, but works, at least part time, at the Powder Keg. He injured his foot some time ago and I don't know if is back yet or not.
I won't give his name here, but ask the owner, Mark, if the fellow with the injured foot is back yet. For anyone starting out in shooting you couldn't talk to a better fellow. I think he has every type of shooting instructors ticket they issue, plus a great guy to talk to.
Matter of fact, I may send you a PM, giving his name and my name.

when I get my PAL I'll live on the EE just till I get a good deal or two ;)

H4831 the guy that knows a lot about levers does he wear a hat and have a slight lisp of sorts when he talks? I talked to a guy there when I was looking at the PUMA and he knew a LOT about them and about Marlins and had a lisp and for some reason I think he had limp that was hard to notice unless you were looking.
