Hello! Can someone point me toward some aftermarket stocks for the Savage Model 12FV? I love the gun, deadly groups, but I'm not a fan of the stock. Thanks in advance!

Do any of these stocks allow and come with a detachable box clip instead of the in-stock magazine normally with the model 12? Really what I'd like is a less flimsy stock in the vein of a 700 SPS Varmint, but with a box clip. I guess I COULD have bought an SPS Varmint, but the accutrigger is loaded with awesome.

I forget which company it was (V Bull maybe?) but someone is working on a detachable box magazine system for Savage actions, hopefully the Model 12 action will work with it. I suspect it'll cost as much as the Rem 700 kits do, which means mucho $$$.

the SPS-V stock is not an improvement over the factory Savage stock - theyre pretty much the same thing, except the varmint has a bit wider forend. in fact id give the edge to the factory Savage stock since at least it is pillar bedded.

youre going to spend a rediculous amount of money on any sortof DM for the 12FV and as soon as you get it your aftermarket stock options will pretty much drop to zero unless you want to get into inletting your own stocks which is a lot more work than people think. i have a new DM savage and cant even order an aftermarket stock for it, not to mention that DMs are such an overrated feature.

if you like wood/laminate then check out the Richard's Microfit or Boyd's laminate stocks, theyre reasonably priced and AFAIK both still ship to Canada. they have a large selection of both sporter and target/varming style stocks as well as ones that are somewhat inbetween.

What a timely thread, I was just looking online for the same thing, 12FV and all... would there be any problems putting a Mcmillan on it?

Generally, can you get something that is for an aftermarket Remington to work on a Savage?

McMillan inlets stocks for Savage.
i think 24hourcampfire is the source most Canadians use to order them.

Thanks for the link manbearpig, I'm definitely bookmarking it. Would I be right in assuming that the cheek piece in the picture of the tactical stock is the "saddle" type?

yeah

IMO the integral cheekpiece looks much nicer, and they cost the same.

thumbwheel is another $20

you select all this stuff at the time of ordering, there are dropdown lists for pretty much every type of stock configuration (some free, some for exta $$).

After doing some more reading, it seems there may be a problem with aftermarket stocks and new Savages? This is from a write up on SniperCentral:

"Another change, even more recent, with the Savage actions is that they switched to a center feed magazine design which should help with reliable feeding, but it is a completely different floorplate and inlet design which pretty much rendered all of the after market stocks useless. This, in my opinion, may have been a mistake as a good aftermarket industry tends to help the longevity of a rifle, especially in the precision tactical world where stocks tend to get changed out. Of course, we are a very small market share and it was probably a calculated decision and risk they had to take. But be aware, B&C and other stock makers have not all switched to the new design, and some are holding off."

I've read other posts on other boards stating this as well... Anyone know how big of a problem this is??

I believe the article was referring to the 10FCP which has the detachable mag. It has the handsome McMillan A5 stock. Can't imagine anyone wanting to change to something different.
It's only the detachable mag that limits alternate stock options.
