I am looking for an alternate to my boito hiker, which sucks and is the most innacurate gun I have ever owned.

I am looking at an H&R SB1-SNk does anyone out there own one if so what do you think of it.

it's funny i just discovered that one on their website. Price point is going to be the main thing. If it is comparable in price than absolutely that would be the better way to go

I second the 410/45 Colt - it really is a neat gun. Plastic and nickel plated so its reasonably weather and abuse proof and you have the option of 410 for grouse and 45 Colt for a real close deer.
Be prepared tho' for the price of 45 Colt ammo, it ain't cheap.
I have the Hiker too and really it's more of a novelty / fun gun that anything else.

that would be a great combo for sure. My buddy has a Springfield M6 Scout which is an AWESOME little .410/.22 but they are really rare. I keep trying to get him drunk so he'll sell it to me

ok.....so I ordered my Survivor back at the beginning of november and still don't have it. Ordered it from Ellwoods and they still can't even give me at ETA, they say it's been back ordered. I called H&R and they claim not to have any problems with back ordered product. Is 2 months a unreasonable amount of time to wait for a gun?

Sounds like a border/import SNAFU-thing?

i never understood why people make such a big deal over the H&R survivor.
the barrel is 20-22", the forend is enormous, stock is hugely bulky and the gun is pretty heavy at 7lbs.

for an ~$80 investment you can pick up a single shot Cooey or Baikal off the EE, cut down the barrel to 18", shorten the LOP on the stock, and end up with a more compact and lightweight takedown backpacking gun.

Sure. You could buy a cheap gun and chop it off. But besides losing your choke, you're gonna have an ugly bubba'd gun. Unless you take it to a gunsmith for professional work. That'll cost more than the gun is worth.

Too bad Savage stopped making the 24C; .22 over 20 gauge. I have one and it is always my favourite gun to take hiking or hunting as it's light, short, and is capable of taking anything from squirrels to deer.

they still made the 24F until 2007 or 08, theres a lot of them around.
i used to think they were the best thing since sliced bread but ive had some serious problems with them that changed my mind. also theyre quite heavy and the design doesnt lend itself to accuracy (the barrels are not regulated at all just held with a loose barrel band).

then again all of my problems stemmed from extraction (or lack of) in centerfire versions like the .223 - never tried a .22 and from what i hear they work just fine.

I bought a H&R Tamer .410 for my kid...looks just like that picture.
I use it more than he does ;)
It's a dandy grouse gun and .410 slugs have killed a pile of deer.
Waited almost a year for WSS then Frontier got it for me in less than a week.

It's really compact and almost too small for us bigger fellas but an easy carry and doesn't stick out much on the side of a pack.

I am getting the run around from WSS about the Tamer. I just sent them a pretty stern letter about misleading customers into thinking they have stock when they do not.

Does anyone else carry the tamer in 20 gauge?

I have one that I bought for my daughters -- and have used much more than they have. It is a useful little gun, for quail, grouse or even rabbits. Makes a great camp gun. It is durable, reliable, accurate enough to do the job -- never had a miss that wasn't the operator's fault -- and it will group slugs under 4" at 30 yards. It can be abused -- for the price and the finish, why worry?

What more could you want from a cheap, reasonable quality gun?
